Hey all,

Pretty much my first visit to the Survivalist Boards, but I am thinking I might enjoy a survivalist training course. Google hasn't really given great results and a search on this board hasn't given much....

Is there someplace I can look for a listing of the places offering something like this? Obviously I would like to find one close to home and short (3-4 day thing).

What I would do is prowl around here a bit, and put together a BOB.

Then go use it.

Practice fire making, water collection/purification, etc......

Also, start watching all the survival shows on TV so you are an expert within a season or two

ETA: In my opinion, a lot of the "survival training" courses are just teaching city folks how to be outdoors-men. Granted there are hard core survival courses, but they are probably few and far between.

Are you looking for a survival class, AKA day hike gone wrong kinda thing, or a survivalist/prepper class, AKA TEOTWAWKI, natural disaster, WROL kinda thing?

We have a local Army/Navy surplus store here and they do the classes. Maybe check for something like tat in your area.

I believe, that in the broad terms of "survival", that there is too much to learn that you just can't get from taking a course.

A course is great to get motivated, but, it often limits the knowlege to what the instructor thinks is relevent.  That few hundred bucks may be better spent on food, water purification, garden seeds, etc..

I've found that survival / preparedness is as personal as underwear. Reading of the experiences of others and considering how those events may affect your area is a good place to start.

If you're in SD for instance....I'd consider a few ways to heat the house....as important as food.

I guess I consider myself an outdoorsman. I can handle the basics out there... But I feel like taking a course is some sort that would aid me if I get lost in the woods or whatever. I would like to retire to the backwoods/mountains someday and would like it have the skills before I get there :-P

My ideal course would be take a minimal bag/pack, and head out into say the Black Hills for 3-4 days. Scavenge food, water, shelter. Etc. That sounds like a lot of fun to me...

Bushcraft is the term most "survival" schools use. Do a google for one in your state or region.

Haley Strategic has a Summer/Mountain/Desert course that includes some gun work, from CQB out to longer ranges.  Includes how to track people and animals, build various shelters, etc.  $1000 for a week out in Colorado.  I would love to take it sometime.
