So I picked up some mags for my M1 carbine the other day to add to my stash and I found some of them to have a slight bit of rusting. I tried using Breakfree CLP and some scratchy pads to remove it. That took most of it off but I still have a few stubborn spots. What will get the rest of the rust off with out taking the rest of the finish off?  Thanks!!

Flitz metal polish is what you want.  Just go slow and it will come off and will not mess with the finish.  Anything else will remove the rust but will also take the finish off

Thanks for the info. The evaporust says it will remove finishes that are oxides such as blueing, phosphate, parkerizing etc but not paint I wonder what the finish is on these mags because if I use that product I can soak the mags to get inside and any crevices that may have rust. I guess I could always test one first.

hadn't thought about the finish, I've only used it on bare metal.  Sounds like it could be used to strip the mags before refinishing them.

Wouldn't that also remove the bluing aka rust bluing?  Did you try this personally?

Nevermind the above, I see it was asked/discussed.

I did mine with kroil and steel wool.  Still have the white spots where the bluing is gone.  Not worth it to me to try and oxpho blue touch up at this point.

Use some steel wool until you get rid of the rust, brush it up with a wire brush, then touch up with cold blue. Let it sit for a day and then cover with a nice layer of grease and wipe it clean with a rag until there's no visible grease residues. Thats it.

blue wonder gun cleaner will remove rust without removing blueing.  Use it and some steel wool, then clean/degrease, and slap some cold blue on.

A home remedy for rust removal is to make a paste of 3:1 proportioned salt/lemonjuice.  Apply the paste to rusty area and rub with a cloth.

No expensive chemicals, no finish damage.  Probably dont even have to leave your house to make it.

...Also good to know in an EOTWAWKI situation, when rust removers are unavailable.

The nuclear option

Coat with naval jelly, wait one hour and wipe all the naval jelly, rust, finish off the metal object.

Refinish bare metal with alumahyde
