I believe that for most people, run, hide, fight is the right order to do things.
In every class I am one of the instructors for, we teach it is best to avoid confrontations whenever possible. (Usually by not being there) These are the WI DOJ course for concealed carry, the NRA's PPITH and PPOTH. (Personal Protection Inside The Home, Personal Protection Outside The Home) Next best is hiding. If you aren't seen, you aren't a target. I can't think of many mass shootings where the shooter methodically searched for victims. (I believe that many of the original victims were targeted in "revenge shootings", but I don't remember the others being specifically being sought out. I could be wrong) The last option is fight back. We are not police, SWAT or Marines, nor do we have their training. We should not go looking for trouble, because it usually finds you. Avoid if you can, fight if you must. This is what seperates us from criminals. But if you must fight back to save your life, fight with everything you have. All bets are off, and every dirty trick in the book is to be used. JMHO. YMMV |

YMMV I think I remember reading that in the Cho shooting, that he did go somewhat "methodically" thru the building looking for victims. Assigning rational methodology to an irrational being is not generally advisable, though, so I'm not counting on anything in an active shooter scenario. I would imagine that the options to pursue would also be scenario dependent. For example, if you were armed, hiding would probably not be the best 2nd choice, choosing how best to quickly find/create a defensive shooting position might be. Just a thought. Pretty good video, though. I would not have thought to kill all the sound output from my phone, for example, so as not to give away my position. It'd be just my luck to get cut off from escape, hear the crazy man coming, get set to ambush the bad guy and somebody sends me a text saying "Hey, did you hear there might be a shooting going on at the mall?"

I watched that last night. It's a nice touch including the 30.06 sign on the door that the perp just ignores. Then the law abiding people have to improvise weapons to try to defend themselves. It's a backwards/broken system that favors the criminal. Why shouldn't the law favor criminals? The WH and Congress are full of them. 
Actually the video advice is pretty good for those who find themselves unarmed in shooting situations. However for those citizens who are armed, the first step should be "FIGHT!" |

Thank you Department of Homeland Security for showing us ( at the 1:00 minute mark ) that when honest citizens who have been licensed to carry a concealed weapon are kept from doing so ( the sign on the door ) a pool of victims is created and that those who are the real threat ( criminals who don't obey the laws anyway ) can and will aquire - and use criminally, any multitude of weapons to kill, maim and destroy the lives of those who, when otherwise left to their own devices would be able to defend themselves with their legally concealed firearm(s).
