This may have been discussed before, but here is an idea for good portable diesel generators. But a used Light tower. Most are between 6kw and 10kw, and are 1800 rpm units. can be picked up for not too much money when you consider they have large fuel tanks and are already on a trailer.

Has anybody done this?

there are a decent amount of 10kw onan diesel generators going through govliquidation.com right now.  I have a friend who just picked up one in perfect running condition yesterday or today (it is still on the trailer he picked it up with right now), his bid was $495.

They are actually 15kw generators in civilian trim - the .mil derates them for continous duty and the harsh environments expected.

I remember guard duty, standing in snow up to my ass, night after night, with nothing but a light-all unit purring away to keep me warm company.
