Mrs Taft and I have been together for the last 25 years and I surprised her with a trip to Yosemite valley and we are staying at the beautiful Tenaya Lodge.   Got here last night just as the light rain hit.   We knew snow was eminent so being the preppers we are we brought all the necessary equipment and gear.  It seems that after more than 7 years of Ar15 Survival forum has taught us to be prepared if nothing else.

We woke up at 0700 this morning to a foot of fresh snow and as of this writing it is still snowing.  Probably 2 feet by now.    The power is out but the lodge has not one, but two backup generators.    Apparently they subscribe to our idea of 2 is 1 and 1 is none.

Tourists set to leave today cannot,  Unless they have chains.   Chains sold out at the store pretty fast.   Cash registers and thus atm/credit cards use is out for now.  Apparently there are lots of foriegn tourists here who rely on credit/debit cards.

Mrs Taft and I are setting by the lobby fireplace enjoying its warmth watching all the visitors scurrying around like sheep, yes sheep, looking for chains, a ride down the hill, water, food, warmer clothes, gloves, all looking a little panicked at the thought they are temporarily SNOWED IN.  I realize this does not compare to other parts of the nation but here in California it becomes quite noticable and almost fun to watch the pandamonium.

Before we came up here we packed our GHB bags, warm clothes, and appropriate gear including firearms.    (we brought lots of cash and some coin also)   We also have a friend who lives close by with a 4x4 with a winch if needed and we literally have all the bases covered including comms.  (ham radio).

We will probably have a nice lunch and then some ice skating in a little while.  The indoor heated pool is also quite nice.

My thoughts:

1. You cannot over prepare for a short vacation.   A 2 day trip can fail just as fast as a week long adventure.

2. Cash is still king. (for now)

3. Prepping is fun.

EDIT:   I will try and post a few pics if possible.

Just awesome, what a great feeling it must be to watch the sheeple people scurry about!  G/F and I always carry a emergency bag when traveling to supplement our luggage. It always contains food for 3 days, small iso-butane stove, spare water and some spare insulated clothing.  We've had to use it twice over the last couple of years and watch other guests in a near panic trying to find food or warm clothing - we just go about our business.

Thanks for the update

I read the OP's post to my wife:

Her: "He sounds pretty smug, like he's proud he's prepared and almost enjoying the people in distress."

Me: "I would be too."

Her: "I know, he sounds just like you would if you were there!"

Thought I'd share that, it made me laugh. It's also true.

edit: I might add that she's fully on board with prepping too, we both laughed.

Yep, fairly smug.   If it had been a real SHTF event, not so much.

Being prepared is like car insurance you hope you never need.

That, my fellow prepper, is an excellent example of contentment in the midst of a storm, well...storm for some....but not you due to the fact that you were ready for the bump in the road. Thanks for sharing first hand the prudence of being prepared.  Hope your wife and you have a blessed time and Happy Anniversary!...

Way to go OP! Sadly though, most of those folks won't learn a thing from this little life lesson.

OP, enjoy your trip and the Tenaya Lodge. I've never stayed at the Lodge but have visited it several times. Yosemite is a wondeful place. I plan on being there in October.
