Hey guys, my father and I are starting to get a little more in the prepping and he suggested that we need to get something for water filtration.  We live in south Florida and have an abundance of ponds lakes and canals that we could draw from.  My question is what type of water filtration systems are available for use that do not require power (elec) to operate.

I was looking at the Sawyer one point systems (Sawyer one point)using a bucket but I'm not sure how good a product it is.  Does anyone have experience using one?  Also what sort of purification measure do you want to have? Meaning how many micron filter is enough to safely drink the water?

As always any help or insight is greatly appreciated

I have both a Sawyer and a Katadyn pocket, along with others.  They both are great products.  But I would suggest using the Sawyer for base camp type situations and the Katadyn for moving situations.  My Sawyer also removes viruses which most filters don't do.

For mobile app's. I  have the  Katadyn pocket for the truck, the katadyn mini and hiker for  the BOB's...and frontier straws for the line 2 kits.

my reviews of them.

hope they help...though it aint the saywer.

as i have said many times, this is a super system for a base camp and filters down to .02 microns and lasts for about a million gallons https://www.sawyersafetravel2.com/moreinformation.asp?pid=122 $143

a more economical system that works the same way is http://shop.monolithic.com/pages/the-just-water-bucket-water-filter and costs about $25 but lasts 6-8 months once in use.  this is the same filter used by Texas Baptist Men for their clean water mission.   vid here http://www.monolithic.com/stories/video-just-water-ceramic-drip-filter

I have a .1 micron Sawyer bucket unit, but haven't needed to use it after the initial test... I have a shallow well on property with a hand pump, so I'm not really concerned with virus so I got the cheaper unit, but have some HTH chlorine just in case...if you decide on Sawyer, their on line supplier is Adventure Safety Products....

i have several setups.

kaidyln pocket filter. which does about 10,000 gallons i think
pool shock, 5 lbs does about 30,000 gallons or so.
a 5 gallon bucket drip filter, .02 micron i think. it was cheap $30.00 bucks. no gallon limit, just 6 month life span once you use it. all carbon i think
then i bought camelbak inline filters. they are $10.00 bucks from uncle sams surplus. they are awesome for on the move filtering, and filter about 100 gallons.
