1. the mil stuff is not "hotter" than the commercial 124 gr offerings

2. 10 rds of 9mm will fit on a 223 stripper clip
you can take 5 clips, stack them opposite each other, then wrap in tin foil(prevent tape from sticking, then duct tape and have a very small package that wont rely on paper.
That way when you open it, you only have 5 clips to deal with vice 50 rounds falling all over.
lastly ammo will last forever as long as its dry. I found some old 223 that had been in the bed of my avalance for a few years and it all shot as well as the day it was made.
YMMV

ETA

I do the 5 (6 for 223) stripper clip method for 308 and 223 in my go bags. They pack nicely and dont take up much room. The clps keep them form getting loose when opened

All my loose ammo goes into zip-loc food containers.

+1 on ammo lasting forever.  There's still WW1 .30-06 circulating around being shot!   Although I wil add to on top of being dry, it needs to be temperature stable as well.

Too many hot/ cold cycles can cause trace condensation that over time has negative effects.

Excellent idea! Never thought of using a stripper clip for 9mm...

There wont be any damage unless you through them off a buildign several times.

Also its not really a comparison if you take the boxes and shoot them at different times.

High heat will degrade ammo, but not a couple of years of diurnal heat in a truck. Gov't tests it doing accelerated aging at 140 F for years, Unless something is seriously wrong with the lot, it's not a problem.

Once when I was in the navy, we went diving in the harbor in Guam. We went to a site where ammo was dumped overboard during WWII. I picked up a couple of 50 Cal rounds and took them ashore. Both corroded on the outside, but one was factory new on the inside.

Let me get this straight. Your emergency stash of ammo in your truck is in a very well taped up box that has to be cut open to be loaded into mags you have presumably just emptied in a fire fight, instead of in a couple mags that take a few fractions of a second to depoy?

Huh?

If you are worried about loosing your mags to a car thief, think about how much more concerned you will be when you have emptied a couple mags in self defense and need more ammo and you have to cut open a package and load one round at a time into a mag while you are being shot at.....your spare ammo is useless in a high speed encounter.

I am betting the OP thinks boxes of ammo in his bug out bag are a viable defensive strategy. I only carry ammo in mags.

If i get bored enough to play with packaging my ammo tighter I will look this thread back up.

In the 80's grendel designed and sold a 380 that had an internal mag fed by stripper clips.
