Every time you do something survival related make a note of it in a journal, I used a Microsoft Word Document. For me it makes me want to do something so I can write it down. When I feel like I'm way behind survival wise I can look back at all the stuff I accomplished in the last 30 days and feel better.
For Example: 3/11/12 Took my son to the range to shoot his .22 Listed to Survival Podcast episode #801 |

Also use it to inventory your supplies & track usage Every time I try to do this, I get too caught up in making the spreadsheet too complicated and fancy looking. Then I lose interest, lol. I actually stopped working on recently, but this thread has inspired me to start again. On this one I used conditional formatting and a priority (1-10) numbering system to plan my future purchases based on importance and urgency. I also used those fancy flag icons to track pantry usage, but remembering to input food usage on a daily basis was challenging. I need to develop an app with a simple interface to input product usage and have it update a spreadsheet automatically. Maybe even have it alert me when certain things are getting low.... See, lol, there I go again

If you have an iphone, there's a cool little app called "Food Storage" that does all of it for you. I add items to it as I cruise through the grocery store. I'm sure there is probably something similar for other phones. |

I've had pretty good luck with Food Storage Planner . It is designed more for Mormon's to use, but it applies to everything we do.
I can use it to track non-food items, such as 72-hour kit, Ammo, Automotive kit, canning equipment, clothing, commo, etc. Just about anything. It allows you to prioritize as Survival, Standard, or Luxury. You can track by Vendor, Location ( where did i stash it ), Unit Cost, and Shelf Life. It has a Recipe module that allows you to set a Recipe Factor, if you buy a loaf of broad, how many servings is that; Calories, Nutrition. You can output reports for Shopping List, Pantry List, Rotation and Summary in a text format and then import these into Excel for manipulation. You can trial it for 30 days also. I've had it for a few years and it works well. |

I went the spreadsheet route and uploaded it to Google documents. This way, no matter where I am (CostCo, WalMart, etc) me or the wife can access it through our phones and have a 'live' inventory that we can shop against.
I started a prep journal once. Then, for giggles, I put it online. Then it turned into a blog. That was nine years ago...still at it. |
