Looking through all the survival threads got me to thinking.
I have many of the items and skills described but lack a comprehensive plan, really just a collection of items I know I'll need but no real organization. I rarely read a thread here where it doesn't expose a hole in my collection.
I have begun a storage system to help with the rotation of our canned goods and looking at the shelves I've stored the rest of my preps on I could use some type of guide or list of recommended items.
I also need to work on water purification and storage. Been putting this off due to cost.
Is there a thread or website that lists the basic items/skills needed to begin the process.
I know it's subjective but looking from the outside in the process really does appear involved to truly be prepared.

I prep to give myself options.  No real plan, basically, what happens can be such a wide variety after "first contact" the plan goes out the window anyway.

Start with the stuff that is most likely to happen; residential fire, extended services outage, personal financial (job), car accident/stranding.  Then move on to more encompassing stuff; hurricane, massive flood, civil unrest/war, massive bio/chem/nuke accident.  These will be based on where you live.

Keep learning and observing to try to compare and find where to fill your gaps.

It is hard to give a specific list of recommended items as everyones situation is different.
There are multiple ways to approach prepping, and few easy answers.
A lot depends where you live, how many people and what you are prepping for.

For example: we (wife and I) live out in the country.
There was a heavy freeze a few years back which shut down the interstate for about 4 days.
It took:
1 day for the propane places we had access to  be out.
2 days for the local grocery store to be empty of food.

We started by thinking about what we needed if we could not leave our property for a week, due to weather, etc.
We looked at what we eat now and how we could store things that would make that week at home pass with as few changes as possible.
For some, buying a years supply of freeze dried foods and storing them away until needed works.
For us, we don't eat a lot of canned, ready to eat foods, we do eat a lot of beans and rice, so we started with that.
Now we store wheat, oats, pasta and have now started roasting our own coffee beans.

Then we thought about that same week without running water.
What would we drink, how would we wash, flush toilets, etc.
For us, we have a well, so we worked on ways to keep the well pumping.
Wer also added ways to store water so we would not need to constantly run a generator.
and finally added items to purify water if needed.

Then we thought about that same week without electricity.
What would we need to cook, provide heat and light, recharge cell phones, etc.
Generator first, now adding solar options.

Once we had the basics figured out, the rest starts to fall into place.
Then it is just a matter of stocking enough items for the amount of time you wish to prep for.

I would say plan for a most likely scenario. You live in Utah, I don't see a need to plan for hurricanes...

go back 100 years and take a look at the local disasters. House fires, losing income sources, etc should also be looked at.

no need to plan for a zombie apocalypse and not be ready for a house fire...

Keep reading here....take notes....develop a plan.

Everyone's situation is different.

We plan by the beans, bullets, and band-aids.....get those taken care of ....for the amount of time you want to prep for.

Everything else is for comfort.

For water, watch craigs list for 55 gallon barrels.  I paid $10 each for mine.  They had wine in them previously.  So for $50 I had 250+ gallons of stored water.

Thank you for the suggestions.
I have run most of the scenarios mentioned through my mind but I think I'm going to detail them on paper and fill in the gaps/document as I run across/read about them.
I inventoried our canned goods and made a spread sheet. It's time for the wife unit to visit the bishops store house with her parents.
For anyone who has access to these from the LDS Church, they are a great resource and mostly you'll run across some salt of the earth types while there.
You don't need to be a member(I'm not).

That's what my wife and I are doing now.

We are getting both everyday foods and stocking long term in mylar, we still have a ways to go on this part.

I'm looking at a generator for when the power goes out due to weather or down line we won't lose our food in the freezer and fridge. I am also getting another deep freeze just in case the one we have goes out. Don't want to lose all this food.

Our home is all electric, with a fire place. I'm looking at getting at least one 250 gal. propane tank, maybe two for an outside kitchen I'm going to build. Wanted one anyway for BBQ'S and get togethers. Will have both wood and gas set up's.

As far as water, we are hurting here. We also live out in the country but we don't have a well, we are on rural water. I'm checking into a well but not sure if we have the ground water on our place. We will cross our fingers on this.

We are storing water in the 7 gal containers, I am ordering a 275 gal. water storage container but might bump it up to 2.
I also am going to be putting up gutters on the house, the shop / man cave and our sheds .
Once  we are GTG on these items, I'll start ordering the Emergency Essentials type food items for longer rang preps.

I also stock PVC pipe and fittings in case of broken pipes ect.

I have started storing gas for the generator, just have a few 5 gal. cans for now but once I build a place to safely store it I'll be getting more.

Among all this we are adding first aid supplies, OTC Meds, Hygiene items like soap, shampoo, tooth paste.

We keep extra eye glasses on hand just in case, the wife is on blood pressure meds, trying to get her to talk to her Doc. about getting a years supplies, we'll see on this.

And of course we do have a few weapons, but need more ammo, I'm going to build a couple more AR's out of some recievers I purchased back last summer.

This is how I'm going about our preps.

Don't know if it's the right or best way but it got us moving in the right direction anyway.

I wouldn't know if ours is the best way either, but you have a plan and that is more than half the battle.

I know when I first started thinking about this stuff it can be overwhelming.
If nothing else, what I learned on here is make a list of the most likely things and start planning from there.

We started on our food storage about a year ago and we already have more than enough LTS to last a year.
We bake bread from wheat we gind, my wife has really gotten into canning and now I am roasting my own coffee beans.
Super easy and the coffee is better than starbucks.

Who woulda thunk it.
