How's the BOL solar-powered fridge/freezer project been going? Haven't heard any more about it since it fell into the Archives Black Hole a few months back. Are the Twins still in operation?

Earlier this evening, I noticed that Home Depot has the 7 Cu. Ft. GE freezers on sale for around $170. Might have to snap one up...

Hi Ski, yes they're perking right along and I was disappointed to see a lot of my topics get shit canned. Especially the water filtering ones.

Sort of discourages me from doing more of them, considering how much time it takes to write one.

Anyhow, the fridge and freezer are going thru the second winter and have seen temps below zero and up to close to 100F  with no issues. My SO loves the convenience of having them and I get better food to eat when we're here. Had a small piece of fish and broccoli tonight. Sometimes it's better...

I think the H-D ones are the same as Sam's, $170 is a very fair price, make sure you buy the bigger of the two models, the compressor systems are the same from what I can determine, although compressor mfgrs vary.

I think Sam's has the ~$170 all the time, last I looked. They usually have the two models, the smaller and the bigger.

<lots of snipping>

Not to wander too far off into OT land, but...

I'm not sure how the software here works, but I have seen that:

threads can be marked no-archive

threads can be moved, with a placeholder

sub-forums can be created

Leads me to...

Can we create a section/forum/subforum of somewhat "epic" threads, where old threads are left to "just fade away" instead of die in the archives?

There's a LOT of good stuff that gets posted here, and if all of those threads were tacked the first two pages would be filled.  it would be nice if there was a central repository of excellent topics, that couldn't be posted in directly anymore, where we could go look for these things.  There's probably 30-50 threads I wish weren't in the archives but rather readily available.

roger doger.
both of those topics (fridge and H2O filters) are still of interest to me,
losing a computer w/out "Carbonite" sure sets one back.
my arfcom search skills suck. I need to print everything ........

how about a redux?

That water filtering post(s) should have been sticky'd.  There have been several in the 'water, safe to drink' genre that should be there, as well.

I agree. I used a lot of that info for my own H2O preps.

Thanks EPXY! Keep them coming!

Threads drift off to the archives at whatever frequency Goatboy decides. You can always request that they be set "no archive".

Nobody "shitcans" threads that don't have some sort of a problem.

Send someone an IM with a thread link and ask. If it's a decent "how to", there shouldn't be an issue.  BTW, old threads don't die, they just go to the archive server and are accessible by that (separate) search feature.  From what little I know about how things work here, it's (probably) done to keep the main database down to a manageable size for the main search engine.

Please keep in mind that you pretty much have to keep your pics hosted and the links to them active. An old "how to" thread with a bunch of broken links isn't much good.

If you request a thread be marked "no archive" please DO include a link to the thread! Thanks.

I've done that with a number of threads in Safes-and-Home-Security...  makes high-content-value threads easier for people to find.

Lets see. The thread on RO water filtering *is* marked no archive and *is* still in the active forum. It's still accessible, update able, ect.

http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_17/577038_UPDATED_w__pix___post__7____Portable_Rev_Osmosis___minimal_head_pressure___6_feet.html

These threads will age back in the forum by last post date. If nobody posts in them for a good while, they'll eventually settle on the last pages listed in the little drop down page list.  Right now, there's about 1 1/2 pages of threads tagged no archive in this forum and almost two pages in F&G.

BTW, you won't see those funny little no archive icons next to those threads if you're not logged in (for whatever reason), I checked.
