“You can’t even open your garage door or your electric gates if you don’t have a generator,” he said. “And with the weather so unpredictable, it’s become a required amenity.”
"You can’t wash dishes, you can’t wash yourself, and it’s 20 degrees." ell oh ell http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/10/garden/generators-emerge-as-a-status-symbol.html |

After dealing with undesirables trying to steal my generators during extended outages I would caution the people in that story about being cavalier with their off-grid power capability. Lighting up your landscape accent lighting...really? Some of those folks are just begging to get ripped off. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Holy crap, I never thought of that Think of the possibilities with a deep cycle battery and some cheap LED lighting. We could set up a honeypot/trap...at a vacant neighbor's home. I'll be in the man cave-time to warm up the soldering iron. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Quoted: "You can’t even open your garage door or your electric gates if you don’t have a generator,” he said. Never met a garage door or electric gate that couldn't be manually opened. Gotta get inside to pull the manual release cord. I would be seriously inconvenienced if I came home to a power outage, since I frequently do not carry a house key. Of course, my generator is in my garage, so that wouldn't do me much good. |

Suggestion to those that have windows on their garage doors AND a manual release cord with the electric garage door opener.....get rid of that cord. Think about it. |

“You can’t even open your garage door or your electric gates if you don’t have a generator,” he said. Never met a garage door or electric gate that couldn't be manually opened. The release on my mother garage door wouldn't open, even after I sprayed the crap out of it with wd-40. I had to bring over a battery and inverter to open it. |

I ziptied the release. You can't release it with a wire. I also don't have any windows in my garage door. You won't be getting into my garage that way. +1 No windows on our garage door either. I'll be removing the rope and safety wiring the release ASAP. |

Of course, my generator is in my garage, so that wouldn't do me much good. As has been posted, you don't HAVE to get inside to pull the release cord on a garage door. However, mine are DAMN heavy. And I do mean HEAVY. I've had to try to lift them before and it ain't easy. As to the problem with keys. Ran into that problem a few years back. Big Ice Storm, power out for days. On the way home, realized that we almost ALWAYS go in and out thru the garage door. I had a key to the front door, BUT I did NOT have a key to the glass storm door in front of the main door. Got home just before the power went out and unlocked the glass door. My fence gates were all locked on the fence and I did not have a key to that either. Spent some time organizing keys after that. Now, my key ring has one of every key I need to get into the house. Plus, I made duplicates and labeled them all. Grouped the necessary ones together so we always have the ability to grab a complete set of keys in an emergency. Had to give a set to my kids during the first Ice storm and that left my wife and I down to one set. Never again. I also now keep a set of them at my office, just in case. Dave |

I just had a new custom wood garage door installed and they recommended I upgrade the 20+ year old unit and offered a battery backup one that was only $20 something more than the regular one. Even though I have a standby generator I agreed to it and it might be a good idea for those of you who use your garage as your primary means of entry. I think maybe they can retrofit to an existing unit. If you have a DC unit I'm sure you can if not why couldn't you just stick a UPS up there and plug it in? Grove |
