I wasn't sure what forum to put this in.
I would like to put together a setup for personal coms to run on my Plate Carrier. This is a brand new nut for me to crack and I have very little knowledge on the subject. It looks like most people have some type of PTT and Electronic Ear Pro with a Boom Mike. What kind of componants should I be looking at? What are the best sources for info and to purchase? I have some Kenwood Handheld Hams already. |

I'm an Icom guy, but Yaesu and Kenwood make really nice stuff as well I have a couple of setups for hands free comms while on my feet. The first one is a standard speaker-mic that I can clip onto my collar, with a 1/8" dual male cable that goes from the secondary output on the speaker-mic to the audio input on my electronic shooting muffs. The next step for that setup is to retrofit a boom mic to the muffs, and run the PTT switch on a wire down my sleeve and into my support hand or something. My other setup is a Heil headset mic with an adapter. The problem with the Heil setup is two-fold: I haven't yet constructed a remote PTT, and the headset itself offers no hearing protection. A while back another ARFcommer offered to help me construct a suitable wiring harness for a Sennheiser headset. What I should really do is buy a Peltor Comtac headset/boom mic and enlist his assistance to make that work for my Icom portables. I've been reluctant to spend the $400+ for the headset and hardware though. Howard Leight electronic shooting muffs have a 1/8" aux input if you are looking to save a few bucks. They are pretty decent for around $50. From there, you can either construct or buy the double male 1/8" cable needed to connect to your radio's aux output. This gives you audio from your radio, hearing protection from gunfire, as well as ambient sound magnification. I'd like to put a few of those sets together and test them with a couple of ARFcommers from the NH crew. If I can come up with a complete solution that doesn't break my piggy bank I'll put together a DIY tutorial like I did with the portable power stations. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
