I've got a bunch of water containers. Mostly the 7 gallon blue cubes and 5 gallon water jugs like used for home and office dispensors. I've been keeping them empty in the garage and only break them out for camping trips. But, I think I've been a bit of an idiot not keeping them full of water for emergencies.

I've got a water softener, and I've also got a reverse osmosis on my kitchen sink. Would filling the containers with either or both of these filtered types decrease the amount of time the water would stay good in these containers? It should also be mentioned that I live in the Phoenix area, so temps in the garage can get pretty high in the summer.

Also, if I used just regular tap water would it keep longer and how much longer?

Water is water, water will be indefinitely good, ie it won't bad. You might get some small nasties, but they can be easily filtered out.

Actually you shouldn't drink soften water because they can sodium which could be bad for you. That is why you seen a bypass for the water in the kitchen, sincce people drink water from there. Soften water is mainly for washing clothes, beacuse the soap has to get rid of the hardness before it can clean.

Shit, I've had softened water in a lot of houses throughout my life. Never heard it was bad for you to drink before.

I was thinking the regular tap water would be best because it has some chlorine in it. But, it would also have the added minerals that our hard water has around here.

THe small amount of salt that is in softened water it is so small it would be sweated out in less than a few hours on a cool day.
The salt in softened water has long been a myth.
The next myth is RO water has the minerals all taken out of it and its no good for you.
Water stays good forever , however algee can grow in it at anytime if it is not treated, also water can get the taste of the container it is in if stored along time.
Try a few drops of bleach per gallon for storage to treat it.
