Jameco electronics sends out electronics projects every so often. This month's project is a DIY light that uses LEDs and a wall wart charger.

When the power is on the LEDs are off. When the power goes out, the light comes on. It's a very low current driver circuit so 4 AA batteries should power it for a very long time. It would be a pretty simple change to use NiCd or other rechargable batteries and modify the circuit to charge too.

Ikea solar light found here.

Recharging time is 9-12 hours in sunlight, but over 12 hours on a cloudy day.
When the battery is fully charged, the product will light at full power for aprox. 3 hours.
Includes 3 rechargeable batteries (AA 1.2V) that stores energy from the sun. The batteries can be replaced and last a minimum of 2 years.
Built-in LED light bulb.
LED life time approx. 20,000 hours.
Light colour; warm white (2700 Kelvin).

I have two of these and the only thing that I wish was that you had the option for it to charge if off the wall outlet.

Great post...I still can't figure out a good low wattage light setup for home.  I have the obvious candles, lanterns, and other items but would really like a LED light setup.
