I keep my long term stocked ammo in a Greenlee job box, stored in ammo cans.  I want to buy bulk M855 in cardboard cases.  It says it is GTG for long term storage, but I wonder if I would be better off transfering it to ammo cans.

Any advice?

I've personally shot WWI ammo. Provided it's not in any extreme environment it will last a very long time.

If you can't score cheap ammo cans locally, Ops has reported excellent results using paint cans (available at Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. for a couple bucks).

High temps (over 100*F) will degrade the powder over time.  Remember the Guatemalan ammo from a few years back? BANG pop pop BANG pop BIG BANG...

Keep it in the basement or other such area, it it's damp use an ammo can with dessicant, or paint cans.  I've shot WW2 ammo, Cold war Soviet ammo, etc.  Even snot some 25 yr old reloads, no problem if it is kept away from high temps.
