I'm thinking a major meteor hit requires a bit more than the standard 72-hour kit. This isn't unreasonable by corporate standards, in fact maybe a bit behind the times. I'm sure they're getting extra funding for stuff like this. And... it would suck if your were the guy in space when the hurricane hit florida and houston... ![]() -Slice |

Quoted: Think they know something we don't? Meteor, burts of gamma rays..... No. NASA couldn't keep a secret if their budget depended on it. If you want good inside info about NASA all you have to do is read http://www.nasawatch.com/ |

Hmmm 1 - So many companies are beginning to push some type of GHB for the car or office and prepping in general. 2 - You see much more advertising of prep kits, supplies and "off-the grid" equipment. 3 - Many Wally Worlds, Sam's and Costcos are now stocking more prepping kits and goods. 4 - Prices are going up on water storage, and water filtering. Interesting. Prepare for the 2012 hype, coming soon. |

I personally know the Head of Emergency Preparedness at NASA HQ, Washington, DC.
Great guy. I was his certifying firearms instructor for many years. He is a hell of a ground fighter too. I had a bruise on my stomach about the size of a football for a week thanks to him after doing some ground fight training. That's with a High Gear vest on too. All of NASA's HQ Office of Protective Services are top notch. All former LEOs or Military. Those guys are no BS. You know NASA has a back up plan for their back plan. Its their nature. |

Think they know something we don't? Meteor, burts of gamma rays..... NASA has already came out and warned about increased solar flare activity. Irony is that NASA knows it could be really bad, but they also know it could be nothing, so they want to be scientific and responsible, but they also want to warn people w/o too much tin foil. So they walk the tight rope. |

...for massive LAYOFFS! ouch....true....but ouch.... Yep. FY12 gonna be brutal for us. I am hearing another 10% by Oct 1st. Already laid off about 10% so far. I work with guys at Johnson and all of the NASA employees I know still have their jobs. I was told it is the contractors that are going. There is no budget and no shuttle work. They have been tasked with coming up with their own design projects and prototyping them. ETA – I know as a nation we need across the board budget cuts but this is really stupid / sad we don’t have a vehicle to the replace the Shuttle. There is a certain amount of ‘tribal knowledge’ required to maintain our space program. Now we are going to have to start over again when (if?) we start up next time. Possible bright side - I have seen the level of risk aversion grow at NASA over the last 20 yrs to point of being a major hindrance. On one project, a materials and fracture expert (contractor) was telling me to torque #4-40 SHCS to 1 in#. We refused saying our way or no way (used the standard 5-6). This level of torque would have guaranteed a failure. I guess that is what happens when you a combine a ‘text book only’ engineer (masters IIRC) and high-risk aversion. |

NASA can't grow or shrink its civil service without Congress' permission, so the contractors get the axe. NASA really can't keep secrets. When I worked there we saw so much stuff leaked to NasaWatch.com it was silly. NasaWatch has a huge following among the contractor employees, and NASA can't and doesn't do ANYTHING without contractors. There are no secrets at NASA. Except that room where they keep the alien brains.
Also, as was pointed out, two large parts of the workforce are in hurricane prone areas, and there are volumes of procedures in place for preparation of the facilities. They do a DEFCON-style system: hurricane possible in one week, do this.... hurricane likely in 4 days, do this.... hurricane imminent within 48 hours, do this. |

I came from DOD and they would have cut NASA's GS dead weight years ago. I have never seen so many GS-12,13,14,15 in my life. |

What I've seen at MSFC (Huntsville) is that the cuts that have come around over the last ten years have gotten rid of some machinists, scientists, and engineers. Others have just been harassed to death by the threat of cuts or, worse IMO, the continual redirects from HQ. They fund you on an NRA or some similar funding instrument, then 6 months later they cut the funds in half. Then three months later they tell you to continue using the money but work on a different topic. In the end they lose people that are all but irreplaceble and end up with empty shells of programs loaded with managers with nobody left to manage. You ain't kidding about dead weight. |

We could have a thread on just waste alone that is for sure. How about spending 2.3 million on a test facility for a large upgrade knowing that they did not have any work in the future. Get the project done and now they are getting ready to close the test facility down. "Cound not stop the upgrade, the money was already programmed." Unreal. |
One of my friends used to work for JPL in La Canada, which is related to NASA. And he left there after working there for 20 years. He feels much better, even though he is making less. He said there is something to be said for your sanity.
His other friends are bracing themselves for layoff at JPL. |

Being on the behind the couter side of the firearms business is proving it wrong.I see 20+ people a week asking 2K or so for their obama panic buy special AR... that I could buy new at $500 or so... Just because you bought it at a 300-1000% profit margin to the seller... don't expect me to buy it back for that... The general sheeple seems to think over paying means that is what they can sell it for. So don't bet o getting any good deals. |
