| Beef Tallow. I read in the post last month about someone asking about a good backpack food. Someone mentioned Pemmican. Well I got to looking and found that one of the ingredients to Pemmican is beef tallow. Now here in NM Pork fat is almost as high is pork roast, which of course can be rendered to make grease. Beef fat, however,is free at our grocer. What is Tallow good for? cooking, soap making, candle making, all kinds of things apparently. It stores for quite some time. I have been reading on the Paleo diet and the evils of Carbohydrates. I have gotten to thinking that my food preps are Carb intensive with not a lot of oils/proteins. I just wanted to bring this up because at FREE, it is worth considering even if its just some to get a surplus of cooking oil. What say the hive about the uses, benefits, negatives etc...? |

having used beef tallow for carvings, I have always been told it is inedible.
rancidity is an issue, though it doesn't mold in my experience, there is a risk of food borne illness as well. Pemmican, made from buffalo tallow went rancid as well and having the running shits is not my idea of survival in the long run, may be ok if you're on the trail for a few days in cooler months and just trying to get by or a part of winter preps, prepared in the fall and put up in cooler weather, but summer time and animal fat are not copacetic for uncooked consumption,. |

Really? Jihads read that pemmican lasts for a year unrefeugerated and that tallow does not go bad. Do you have any thing I can read about it? Everything on the net suggests otherwise. My mom kept rendered Bacon grease for a long time. |
