I know it's been discussed in the past, but I wanted to kind of revisit it now that more time has gone by and more people have had actual experience with it. Our town is having an informational meeting next week for it, and I'm planning to go check it out.

I'd like to hear what peoples' impressions and experiences have been with their local CERT groups. What exactly to they have you do? I understand their underlying purpose, but I'm curious what the practical application has been. Parts of the local description in the paper almost make it sound like they want to use it like a Reserve Police. People here on the SF have talked about it being a great way to get useful training, but I don't necessarily want to spend my weekends directing traffic in parking lots at the county fair, if you know what I mean.

So, please sound off with the good, bad and the ugly of your experiences with the whole CERT thing.

Thanks.

i done cert traing last May acutally graduated on my birthday.Overall the first aid traineing was sub par but the rest of the class worth it to see how they would operate. You will not be directng traffic at least in SFL.over all I thought it was a waste of time on personal note. But it was worth it o see how they operate. And some communitys around here acutally have there shit to gether,They have there shit squared away/.A real suprise. When we have A LOT of yankes.Around here.

He did it last year, didn't get much out of it, but thought it was interesting to see how the local authorities worked.

What was the time commitment like? Did they just do the training, then disappear? Or did they have you come in every month for some sort of meeting?

Our local CERT shut down this February due to apathy.  There were maybe four or five of us who showed regularly to the meetings who weren't already first responders or other .gov officials.  When the local director (who also was one of the folks running the local health department) stepped down, nobody stepped up to take his place so they just dissolved the thing and passed the money out to the other groups working the area.

Seriously some of the subdivisions around her acutally have ther shit together. It was a surpise. One of them made every cert team member go thru the class. One subdivision acutaly had plans on how to shut down and patrol their neighboehood.I was impressewd they acutaly had armed team meambers with pistols and rifles with commo.I wish I had that in my community.Cert by its self is really a joke. But if you have a comunity that works together it can be good.

Can't hurt you will see how your local emergency (control) people operate. That can be good to know. The training if your at all prepared or can think for yourself will be a disappointment. But you can learn what the plan is in your area and what communities will do.With that in mind I would do it again.

I have a background in public safety and I view CERT as a F'ing joke that ranks right up there with people that get in the way like ARES / RACES ham radio whackers.

Before any of you hammies get butt hurt, I've been a ham for several years as well.

I think it would be worth it just to see who is involved in stuff in your area.

Where I work cert stands for cell extraction response team so yeah I took that class and have that t-shirt, a tad dirty though, but it is not related to the community.

Lately it seems like there is a lot of training offered depending on who you know.
