I have a severe case of congested sinuses w/ sneezing. Short of putting blasting caps up my nose and detonating...what do you use to unstuff congested sinuses?

Sorry about your cold. Many people in my AO are ill.

I use Nyquil at night and a nasal decongestant in the day.

I'm not the expert on colds though. I rarely get sick, maybee once every 2-3 years.

ETA: I have many types of meds in my preps, so I dont have to go out and buy any meds. Instead i try to rotate them. you should too. Its not very expensive if you stock generics. My wife decided we should do this around the time the N1H1 started moving around a few years ago. She suggests many preps i never think of.

as hot of shower as you can stand....and a bulb syringe....if it's that bad....

Hope you feel better.

A buddy just said a table spoon of horse radish.....but I'd say he was joking....

get a big syringe and mix a quart of warm water with 3 teaspoons of sea salt and one teaspoon of baking soda. irrigate your sinuses with the syringe by holding your head down and spraying syringe full of water up your nose this is what i had to do after my sinus surgery. it works. make sure to blow your nose real good afterwords.

This, but hands instead of syringe and I do in the shower.

nasal irrigation works pretty well for me, as it did for some others who replied.

Trying to blow your nose repeatedly only serves to aggravate the congestion. Try to avoid it. Instead, soothing irrigation will help. I must admit that I do not do it, though. I hate the feeling of it, and only do it in the rare times I get a really bad case. Otherwise, I take Emergen-C's, tea, and plenty of fluids. Colds never seem to last too long with this approach.

Hope you feel better soon.

Well, I did it in a nice hot shower. I must admit though, it was torturous! It seems to have helped to relieve some of the congestion. How many times a day do you do it?

I used the Nyquil at night and decongestant during the day but after 3 days of it I start getting the shakes. My system hates that stuff. So now I'm trying the bulb syringe and salt water concoction. I do have some 'fish' antibiotics but I don't know if I should start them. I just took a 10 day round of penicillin about 1 week ago.

spicy food clears me out.  I don't like horseradish but it would work as well.

A leaking can of mace at work can clear me out real quick depending on what brand it is.

Lots of fluids helps of course and while I have used mucinex I never seem to do that well with it for some reason.  It annoys me more than it helps me.

Lately the spicy food just gets things moving and if it gets moving I can get rid of it.

Mucinex or Robitussin - basically anything with guaifenesin (sp?) in it. Your nose will run like a hose for a little bit, but that's how it will flush out all the pollen and other crap that's causing the congestion. Things like Sudafed will dry up the sinuses and stop your nose running but won't really fix the congestion.

I have been fighting sinus congestion for the last 5 weeks, but not so much with the nasal passages but congestion in my ears.

I have already ruptured one ear drum. I can breath fine though my nose but have loss of hearing, ringing, and pressure in my ears.

It will clear up and in a week or so come back with no warning. Just wake up with it. Predominately on the ear I sleep on.

Yeah I hack up some nasty stuff but no sore throat.

So far 3 trips to family doctor with 2 rounds of antibiotics, decongestant, and predisone. Just finished 12 days of it and it is better but not cleared completely. Guess it is time to go see an ENT.

+1 for something spicy.  Always makes whatevers in there come running right out... even when I'm not congested

I've recommend tobacco nasal snuff before. It worked for me, I had a clogged up e.tube that lasted two months, several doctor visits, pills, specialists blah blah blah. A little snuff up the nose and I was cured in a day or two. I am not a tobacco user, never have been and I stopped after I felt better. IIRC Tobacco is a mild antiseptic, slightly basic and aids in localized blood flow.

I understand that the above may be , just a suggestion because I think it worked for me.

Thanks for all the aid! After the sinus wash and MucinexDM I am feeling relief already. But my body is just worn out now. I'm going to do some reading and relax out. Thanks again!!

i used to be sick all the time with head colds, sinus, ears clogged, chest congestion.  years ago i started taking a generic multi vitamin/mineral capsule, 1000 mg vit C and 5000 units D3 every day.  I guess it built my immune system back to normal because i have not been sick since i started. all the stuff was bought at dollar general and family dollar.  if it works fine and if it don't you gonna be out about 15 bucks - just my thoughts on the situation.
