According to this Yahoo article the Red Cross says we only need to have 3 days of food and water on hand, boy am I relieved, I am set for like, ten or fifteen earthquakes now.

We laugh about this, but their is a lot of people that consider themselves "survivalists" that don't have much more food than this.

3 gun safes and closets full of ammo- sure. Food to feed their family for more than a couple days- probably not.

Every report I've read says you need "at least" three days, not "only" three days, worth of non-perishable food and water for emergencies.  No report I've seen has a maximum listed.

They do read "At least 3 days".  Keep in mind they are trying not to scare the sheep and start a panic driven stampede

If you actually read the article it keeps saying "as a minimum" and "at least" and even in the food section they say "And you should also have a two-week supply in the event that you stay in your home." so I think their on the right track.

Not many here started out with a year of supplies and armaments for a battalion.

I'm all for people starting out like this and working their way up.

No where in the article did I see the reference to ONLY needing 3 days of food and water. You may want to re-read the article.

3 days could help one survive quite a bit, probably 90% of the "disasters" based on frequency (wind, snow, rain storms, minor earthquake or flooding, etc), but of course it would do little for a major disaster.  Plus most people would probably exhaust their "3 days" supplies within 36 hours.

I live in a tsunami zone and if a japan sized one hit here I don't know if I would have any supplies left, however they would be in usable condition if I could find them.  I need to find some off site storage on higher ground.

I posted the article with sarcasm intended.
I have three days worth of food in my desk at work.
I have three days worth of food in my car.
I am saddened because we do have countrymen that do not posses the wherewithal to have a three day let alone a six week supply of food on hand and even more saddened that for some, three days worth of food on hand is a "start" not a way of life.  Three years ago before I knew what ARFCOM and prepping were I always had a full pantry before I spent money going out to dinner or buying a tv.  Maybe I am more fucked up than I thought.

Good point!  My advice: you need a 3-day supply in a BOB.  And you need a place to go that's not in a tsunami zone (BOL or friends/family.) And put the rest of your preps in the BOL.
