| Can someone tell me where to buy MREs? What are the best quality MREs that a civilian can buy? |
|
I need to know to so this is a tag. I have been working on long term food preps but I have avoided the MREs and Mountain house type freeze dried meals so far but I think it is time I learn this game too. We need a Long Term MRE/Dehydrated food Oracle but I am sure not the person to write it!
My plan was to buy a couple and take them backpacking this summer and see what we like. Then, once I know the kids will eat them, work on building up a supply kind of like what I did to build up my ammo stash (Buy every time I need some and put a sizable part away for long term as a SHTF tax). Worked well for ammo and I have my ammo supply, time for a MRE fort to go with the ammo fort! |

First you need to decide if you want military MRE's or the civilian type.
Check MREInfo.com there is a lot of good info on both types as well as some taste test info. Most of the civilian MRE's are made by the manufacturers of the military ones, so most of the food is the same, some of the contents and packaging is different. If you just want to buy some entrées to try, Emergency Essentials (also a site sponsor) is a good place to buy from. As previously mentioned, Armygear.net is a good place to get military MRE's. You are getting 24 meals in their deal. They do not ship them in the original MRE boxes which is a problem for some people, however, everyone that has ordered from them seems pleased with the product and service. You can also buy from gun shows, surplus stores and craigslist. You just have to be aware what you are buying (military/civilian) and check the date codes. See MREInfo.com for the info on all of this. Hope this helps. |

Dr Death,
Wright Patt Air Foce Base has them for sale. 1 case is around $53.00 Do you live near a Military Base? If so maybe one of your Military Friends can get you some. Please Please try a few before you buy a Bunch. There is a Reason they say MRE Stands for Meals Rejected by Ethiopians. Good Luck. |

I would not buy MRE's from Ebay, Gunshows, Craigslist, surplus shows etc... Who knows how they have been stored or where they got them? Have they been sitting in a hot storage unit for six months? Someones trunk all summer? I would look for other options. I agree about Ebay. (mostly due to the cost + shipping but also because you cannot inspect them prior to purchase). However, I have bought plenty from surplus stores, craigslist and gunshows. The advantage there is that you can inspect them prior to purchase and if the cases are intact, in good shape, they are not old and the TTI is good, the MRE's should be good. As to where they got them from.... well..... if that bothers you, then stay away from military MRE's completely as they are not legal for commercial resale and the government does not surplus them. The best place to buy them is probably the base commisary, however I have not seen any at Ft. Hood or Ft. Sam Houston in a long time. |
