Where to get road flares nowadays? CP |
|
Does anyone know if you can shoot the 12ga flares at wal-mart out of a 12 ga shotgun or do you have to use the flare gun? Orion flare guns are sold at wal-mart and they also have seperate refill packs of the flares. I was wondering since there 12 ga could you shoot them out of a single shot shotgun or a pump? There longer than regular shells so i don't think they would work in an automatic but it's possible they could work in a pump or single shot. I just want to know if anyone has any experience trying this or knows if you can?
It would be a lot easier to only pack the flares and use them in your shotgun than also carrying the pistol in a BO situation. |

A few years ago when the older shotshell style 12ga flares were being phased out, my local Wal-Mart put their remaining stock on sale for $.25/pack (yes, 3 for a quarter) I bought the remaining inventory (18 3-rnd packs I believe). I actually have not fired any of them. I have read a warning that shooting the old style shells from a tightly chocked shotgun could cause the shell to lodge in the barrel and burn right through. I do not know if this is really a concern but it is something to consider. I keep a few with my hunting gear (for emergency use in my shotgun) and I also have a 12ga adapter for my HK flare pistol on the boat so I keep a few with that too (in addition to the three "fresh" parachute flares required by CG). I probably should try a couple out this 4th of July. |

Are the flares you shot out of your Mossberg the same type flares that walmart has? I think there called Orion flares. There about 3 1/2 - 4" long but are 12 ga shells. i don't think the new long ones would cycle well in a pump. the bolt only comes back so far, and the mount of the flare shell would still be in the chamber. would probably be a royal pain you get out because you'd need to get it unhooked from the extractor. i'd expect they'd work in a breech loader, like a NEF. don't think they're the kind of thing you want to run thru a nice OU or SXS like a Browning or Perrazi.
however, i haven't tried any of the new ones... because i just don't expect it to work well. check at the local gunshow, or find one of the online vendors that sells all the "specialty ammo". i suspect the reason for these is that they probably modified the flare pistols to prevent anyone from using normal ammo in the plastic pistols, or to make it harder to modify them to work with it. |

I don't know the type Walmart has. The ones I bought were from a Marine store and meant to shoot out of a plastic 12 gauge flare pistol. They are a bit shorter than the standard 12 gauge rounds. |
