I wanted to know who has a jeep as a BOV... Be it a jeep CJ-TJ-LJ- or any Jeep! Opinions??
What engine do you like? Setups? Etc...

08 Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7 Hemi

full time time 4x4, front and rear lockers.

mileage sucks, but I love the power.

i like mine 82 cj7 chevy 4.3 rubicon lift on 33s w/ 4.10 gears
Simple nothing fancy, pretty durable, going to replace rear axle when money is available

well since it;s a  slow start I:ll give my 2 cents,

I have an 80 cj7 it;s no longer roadworthy but itll plow, drove it for 13 years with many engine tranny

combos, a 350 with a HD 700r4 is in it right now, definitly used to get up and go.

I think the best combo was the 307 with the 5 speed standard  but alas don't slam the gears

I like the Grand cherokee with the v8 full time seems to like hillside medians just fine.

The need for a small trailer is almost a must in most circumstances omo.

the cj's like to eat drive traine related parts even with constant grease

we currently have a 99 GCwith  the six  not much different than the v8

Save your money and look at something else.  I have owned three jeeps and all have been POS money pits.  There are plenty of more reliable options out there.  Anyone that tells you they have never HAD to put a dime into a jeep is a bold face liar.  You can get them to be reliable but you will be dumping thousands into to it.

I've had a Cj-5, Cj-8, TJ, XJ and J truck and I can say, stay away from the FSJs they are quirky as hell.  I currenty have a 2002 TJ Sahara 4.0 auto with 28K original miles, a 2000 XJ 4.0 auto grocery getter and am turning the CJ-8 Scrambler back into a streetable vehicle.
Go with the TJ for reliability and aftermarket choices.  I have no reason to BO of where I am but, if I did it wouldn't be in a modified CJ with 258, AMC V8 carb or CHEV TBI. Heading into the mountains with those would suck but if I had to it would be with the SBC TBI
BTW...a built XJ with 4.0 for BOV is GTG IMOP   oh and............................... If it snows 16"s tonight I'll get in my 79' Bronco tomorrow to get to the  coldbeer store

I have a JK (wranger from 2007-current.)

I like it but it's not my ideal BOV since it has a soft top and limited space.

If you really must a TJ I guess

but for SHTF mos its hard to beat a tac nuke as an accessory

Mine a 62 , its fun on the trail and handy around the house , especially for getting left over wood on logging decks

2001 TJ Sahara 4.0 auto with a 4 inch lift and 33inch AT tires.   I love it and so does my wife (who inists on driving it daily to work).  Pull out the back seat and it'll hold all by BO gear, 2 dogs, myself and my wife.

92 YJ 170,000 miles. 1 repair that i needed towed.  tranny at 130,000

In the background is my 2004 Jeep TJ.  Up front is it's bigger, older, brother, a 1966 Kaiser Jeep M109A3.  The M109 is in the process of getting a olive drab semi-gloss makeover.

4.0 Straight Six in the TJ.  LDT-465 Straight Six Multifuel in the M109.  The 4.0 is great and all, but I wish the LDT-465 could be shrunk to fit in the TJ (it weighs 1700lbs).

Buy a Tacoma.

Jeeps are some of the most unreliable POS's know to man. They are made by Dodge for Christs sake. What retard decided to put the clutch slave cylinder inside the transmission anyway. My god what a POS.

I have had 2. One Wrangler and one Cherokee. They are tough but not as dependable as I would like. The Cherokee gave up this year and I decided to buy my wife a Honda Pilot 4x4. It was a great choice. I will buy another Wrangler at some point.

More of a daily driver for me than a BOV:

The red front end is due to hitting a buck crossing the highway last year. This is by far the most dependable vehicle that I have ever owned –– it just turned over 165K miles a couple of days ago. The only failures I've had with it in the 70K miles I've put on it were the water pump, radiator, starter, and a wheel cylinder. You can't beat the 4.0L for dependability and longevity –– I'm hoping to top 300K with mine.

Have a 2008 Jeep Commander Overland. 330HP w/ quadra drive II full-time 4x4. Sucks on gas, but have yet to getter stuck. No problems whatsoever with the engine and other mechanics, but the fancy-smancy touch screen radio has been buggy as hell. I'd rip the darn thing out if it didn't control everything.

07 grand cherokee with diesel and QDII 4x4 system that makes me look like I know how to drive in ice and snow.

After messing with a lot of general motors stuff I will say I love how tight a turning radius the grand cherokee has stock.

I love the fact it comes from the factory with a 7400lb tow rating and tires that can take 44 psi max listed on the sidewall.

Big brakes that have over half the pad left at 44k miles.

Midsize suv with a diesel as a factory option, other than mercedes I don't think anyone else had one because vw had its toureg pulled when I bought my jeep at the dealer with 6 miles before my test drive and 13 miles on it after my test drive.  Mercedes did not offer as nice a 4x4 system as jeep offered and while I could see myself owning a benz I prefer my jeepy.

It is fancy and complicated but for a vehicle to use everyday it sure does things awfully well.

I will probably buy something a lot older and simpler this winter but the jeep is what I use to go to and from work and it has proven itself capable due to its neat little 4x4 system.  Will keep the jeep most likely.  But since they stopped making them a few folks seem willing to pay a lot for em.

I have only used the QDII 4x4 system in this body style jeep and I love it.

Hate that it is so complicated but for a nice little package with a pop soda sized engine displacement, 3.0 liters, it is a cute little station wagon.

If they had a v8 gasser in the wranglers for 07 or a diesel I would have a wrangler.

I really want a stickshift but I got a diesel with an automatic.

I don't test my jeep's limits.  But I do go out in weather that often leaves co workers stuck at work or neighbors unable to get to work.

With just ice I would stay home but ice and snow gives me enough traction to go to work and with my job someone has to be there so if I don't show someone else had to stay to cover my shift.

My Jeep TJ was fun as hell to play around in, BUT

it was the most unreliable vehicle I've ever owned.

after I put 32" tires on it, it got 13mpg.

at 60,000 mikes it started falling apart, seats cracking, door handles breaking off, start motor, etc.

it had no interior room....not enough for 2 guys to drive to a local 3-gun match....much less than a CIVIC

It was a money pit.

'90 YJ with 258  and GM TBI fuel injection, AX15 5 spd, Atlas 4.3, Ford 9" and Dana 60 Axles, 37" Super Swampers. Dont plan on BO , it could get me where I needed to go but would not be my 1st choice because you cant fit much in it. Also have a '79 CJ5 with 350 and SM465 4spd etc.. wouldnt pick it for the same reason. I have a K5 and '89 Crew cab for this purpose.

My wife had a 77 CJ 7 and what a piece of junk. We did lots of work on it, was still a POS at the end of the day. I have a 72 Scout II that I'll likely never part with, unless someone wants to trade me a sweet M1009, that might be worth it.

Have never owned a newer jeep so I can't comment. Wife drive a FJ and I drive a Tundra. We're both happy with each for their intended uses.

'94 ZJ 318 NP231 (I changed t-case) small 3" lift w/33's.  Soon to be installed HPD30 4.56:1/XJ D44 4.56:1 w/full Detroit.  Should make into a nice trail/expo/BO rig.  As far as reliability, I expect to put money into any 16+ year old vehicle.  Upgrade what you can while fixing up, and they're very capable/reliable.  I wheeled an automatic XJ for 10 years and 260K that didn't die until I totally neglected/abused it (gave me an excuse to build the ZJ though!).

I drive a newer Grand Cherokee small block v8 with new QuadraTrak.

Its an amazing vehicle really that will transfer torque from one wheel to four electronically in a fraction of a wheel turn.  Its only a 8" ground clearance but I haven't bothered to lift it.  It gets me anywhere I can think of I need to go short of purposely finding some rock climb.

The upside, is you get all that trail rating but you can't tell it going down the highway where its as comfortable as a car.

Well I've had my rubi JK a year now and no real issues.  96 XJ had a little over 200k on it, put a transfer case in it at 200k and it really needed a rear main seal.  Traded it for a 05 Grand Cherokee 4.7L which has been great so far.  I can actually pull my rubi with it.

I have a 1999 XJ with the inline 6.  I have had to do a few minor things, thermostat, flush the heater core, but outside of that.  NADA.  She's built like a brick (same aerodynamics sadly) but she runs reliable and is a daily driver.  Picker her up with 75k on the clock last year right about this time - now she is getting close to 100k and she's still true as the day I got her.  I have added updated wheels and tires, packed a BOB in the back and keep a few spare parts handy (just in case) but I love my Jeep.

Coming out of a 335i Beemer that I did really enjoy - this was a change of pace but in the end - it's easy to work on, no car payment and I have a car that should run reliably for another 150k miles.

Peace

I know there are many that would say it's not a real Jeep, but my wife fell in love with a KJ (Liberty).  It's an '05 with 68k on it (32k when we bought it).  It's a 3.7 liter V6 Limited.  It's been a rock.  Only thing that has broken was the fan switch.  It would only do off or full blast.  $100 to fix it at the dealership.  I did just put new brakes and a new set of Bridgestone Deuler A/T 695's on it.  When we got it the previous lease "owners" had put another set of the OEM Goodyear's on it and they were total crap!  Couldn't wait to get some better tires on it.

My wife loves it just about as much as me and the children.  Only complaint I have is that it's a little small for me.  My DD is a '07 Ford Explorer Limited (company truck).  I did put some of the kevlar Wranglers on it when it needed tires.  Best Goodyears I've ever had.  Expensive buggers, but it wasn't my money.  I did stick a BFL hitch cover and a small Larue sticker on my company truck though.......

I know there has been much said about Jeep reliability, but ours has been rock solid.  I am a maintenance nazi though.......

+1 on the above. I have a 2004 KJ, Liberty, with the 3.7 L V6. I got it at CarMax with 20,000 miles in 2006. I now have 70,000 miles on it and the only issue I have had to date is the ignition switch broke. I just put new brakes all around and I put  Bridgestone Deuler A/T 695's mounted on Jeep MOAB wheels a few weeks after I bought it. Came with crappy OEM Goodyears and they had to go.

I hope to drive it as my daily driver then in a couple of years pick up another daily driver and make the KJ a BOV with a few mods.

This is my 1998 TJ. It is stock except for 31x10.5 Pro-Comp MT's. It had 183K trouble free miles. I use it to tow a 5x8 trailer for fire wood. I also use off-road every year during hunting season. It is cramped and uncomfortable but excels at "Jeep Stuff" Having said that it wouldn't be my first choice for a BOV.

Very solid - not quite a rock.
A/C has failed, Parking brake lever is broke, and one of the power windows died and it's motor needed replacement.  The check valve is starting to go in the fuel pump assembly.

But it's been a very reliable vehicle motor/transmission wise.

But yeah I'd take as my BOV due to it's reliablity and go-anywhere/anytime ability:

I have a CJ5 with lots of mods. It is 100% reliable, I'd drive it anywhere.

Like others said, not a lot of room, but you can get creative and load it up:

I also have a Cherokee that is more of my daily driver, but it gets used on milder trails and for overland / camping trips. Been reliable except for minor wear items.

ETA- Jeep certainly had some issues in the 80s with reliability. Once Chrysler took over things got a lot better. Most people would be happiest if they stuck with '91 and up models of the Cherokee and YJ Wrangler. Things were pretty well sorted then.

'91 and up was still mostly AMC stuff in the Wranglers and Cherokees for a while. The 80s were just a bad time in general for vehicles, lots of overcomplicated restrictive emissions equipment being applied to '70s era technology.

OP if you want a reliable Jeep, get one with the 4.0L. The AMC Straight Six is the best engine Jeep ever used. Period.
