Hey Speed, were you watching Thepatriotnurse's youtube channel by chance? I just was there last night and dropped a good $25 on some medical supplies after watching a few of her videos. Being a patriot means buying American whenever possible, and not chinese crap for a dollar. |

and sometimes "Ollies" being "a patriot" can mean a lot of different things. being a survivalist / prepper probably can mean differernt things as well. sometimes the two terms(survivalist or prepper and patriot) can walk hand and hand together. sometimes they would mean taking vastly differing actions... Being a patriot means buying American whenever possible, and not chinese crap for a dollar. If buying some chinese stuff so I don't have to rely on an ineffective, ill-prepared, no-leadership government when the SHTF makes me unpatriotic, then so be it, Funny, because most of the items I bought there were packaged/produced within the USA, Mexico and Taiwan. Not the "Chinese Crap" you assumed is sold there. But, I guess I'm not a Patriot then and I don't care. I am not into preparedness to be a Patriot, I'm involved with it to have me and my family survive TSHTF IF it happens - My Family's survival is MORE important then being called a Patriot. If I can buy two or three of item X to put away instead of just ONE item due to its cost then I'll be putting away 2-3 items instead and won't feel bad one bit about it. Do I make decisions on where certain items come from and spend more if it was produced in the USA? Yes, at times. Do I blindly buy ONLY American products? Nope, that's not being fiscally responsible with my finances. |

I was just thinking about starting a thread on "10 SHTF Essentials From Dollar Tree", and here you've gone and done it for me! A few more $1 items to add to the list: 1. Needle-nose pliers - They also sell "linemans" pliers and side-cutters, but you can NEVER have too many of the needle-nose variety! 2. Body Powder - Great for preventing swamp-crotch in extreme heat, or whenever bathing is impractical. 3. Ten-Piece Precision Screwdriver Set - Very handy for repairing eyeglasses, installing small electrical connectors, and general fine-detail work. 4. "Starlogic" carbon-zinc AA cells in 16-packs - Good for any application where you don't want to use the "good" batteries. 5. "Sunbeam" button cells in LR44 alkaline 8-packs and CR2032 lithium 4-packs - handy for LED flashlights, red dot sights, watches, etc. 6. Glass marbles (100 pack) - Make great slingshot ammo. 7. Diamond matches (either the wooden strike-anywhere variety of the books) - You can't have too many matches! 8. "Luminessence" Tea Light candles (in 20-packs) - Handy for light, warming up food, installing heat-shrink tubing, etc. 9. Hard candy - My personal favorites are the Ferrara Pan "Red Hots" and "Traditional Carmels" - they'll last almost forever in a BOB. 10. "Treet" (a cheaper version of "Spam") |

Attacking someones patriotism over where they buy their preps seems a bit silly to me.
No offense....but ask yourself a question.....the S has H the F.....someone offers you a beautiful 1911 with all the bells and whistles....Colt even....and some of the fines American made ammo.....say 200 rds.......OR.... they say you can have 3 China made SKSs and 1200 rds of imported ammo.....which would you choose? Prepping is for survival.....I'm not going to snub and pass up a Thailand made sleeping bag with the hopes of finding a USGI one later.....it just doesn't make sense. I love my country.....but I shop with a prepping frame of mind.....I will buy American...IF....the product is of superior quality enough to warrant the cost....or the cost difference is so next to nothing that it doesn't matter. I do buy used American more than new....because used goes on value ....not a tag. |

UPDATE: Just got back from my local store - The "Starlogic" AA batteries are in 12-packs (not 16), and the Sunbeam CR-2032 lithium batteries are in 3-packs (not 4). Alas, they were completely out of the "Treet" pork luncheon loaf - all they had was "Prem", which is sort of a lower-budget version of Treet. |

I don't have a Dollar Tree close by, that I know of, but we have dollar general and dollar ??? close by. I shop these occasionally. Dollar General recently had canned Green Giant veggies on sale 3/$1 I stocked up. Was speaking with the store manager, his church runs a local food bank, so I bought an extra bunch of 12 paks and loaded them in his van. They're also a great source for stick matches (not strike anywhere, though). |

(YMMV) Another nice thing to stock up on is the toothbrush/toothpaste combo packs. I usually get mine at Dollar General ($1. ea.) It consists of a travel brush and a small tube of colgate. We stack them deep, they are nice to have if you have surprise guests that end up staying the overnight .... I have also learned that grandkids bring a lot of things, but somehow forget their toothbrushes.

I'm not attacking anyone with my statement about buying American. I view keeping jobs in America to be a prep for future generations of my family to have jobs. The most likely major SHTF event for the next generation, is IMHO, our country becomming a third world POS where everyone is either rich(very small percentage) from selling foreign crap to everyone else, a lower middle class to poor, because the only jobs will be in service to...the majority of people who do slightly better than the others because they'll all work for the government. Not a good scenario as I see it, and while I may buy some slave wage third world stuff when I have to, I avoid it as much as possible. While a hardcore survivalist will survive at all costs, using the best methods at his disposal, there is a line that should be drawn, and for me that's keeping Americans working at honest manufacturing jobs with dignity, not a some super-depot––mega low price-mart selling out their fellow American's jobs with every foreign POS they sell.
To each their own. |

To each their own. I used to feel as you do....avoided wally world.....only domestic cars.....buy American....but when they feed on our want to keep it in the country and jack the cost beyond reason.....what do you do? IMHO....we have crossed the threshold.....we have past the point of any return to ideology shared by our fore fathers. These past years have done more damage than we can even fathom yet..... our country is so deep in debt....that the dollar that was once revered as the most powerful currency in the world....is now headed toward being a laughing stock. it's not the guy going down to the dollar general that is sending the job over seas......it's the laws passed to allow the job to go over seas.....does anyone really think that they were opening mass trading so that it would be more competitive pricing.....where is the logic in that? Joe American could never afford to work for the $0.30 a day that Cho China might be getting....or his 9 yr old son. This hasn't been occurring over night.....it's been going for years.....but in the last couple.....it has been shifted into high gear. I look at any one who is prepping now as a thinker......buy the $60.00 flash light.....or the $12.95 equal......buy the $200.00 bag...or the $29.95 equal. I wish we didn't have to do this crap.....don't get me wrong....I enjoy the research....I like the peace of mind.....I love my country......but having to prep on a budget blows monkey butt.....and if it takes china or india...or even mexico....for me to do so.....so be it. to each their own...and I do have opinions....but I will never judge a fellow prepper over his choices of what to buy and from where....there are too few of us as it is....and when I meet the guy down the road that says he saw it coming.....and prepped.....all I'll do is shake his hand.....and smile knowingly. |
| i missed it this year but as usual before Halloween they have light sticks 2 in a pack for a buck. they are BRIGHT and produce light for well over 24 hours. they are smaller than standard light sticks but are well worth the buck a pack. the ones that lasted over 24 hours were orange. it wasnt a real test but the kids had them and when they were done i put them in the bedroom. they were so bright it was easy to navigate in the BR even in the morning and by that next night they were still bright enough to use as markers for say a trail or even a "bathroom" if you were camping. i havent done any real hour test on them but next time im there i will pick up a pack of each color and do some test if they have them. |
| Found another good dollar tree item today in the med section. It's "liquid skin", marketed as a waterproof bandage. The label says it is formulated medical Cyanoacrylate. Pkg contains 2 .5 g pipettes. Product is Mfg in USA and it costs only..............................$1. Tried it out on a heel crack that formed today and it's working great. |

| Hey, myly1. If you put those chem sticks in the freezer it will extend the usable life span quite a bit. Just warm them up and they'll start to glow again. I was a scuba instructor and we used Cyulume light sticks for night and deep dives as safety lights. After the dive we'd bury them in the ice chest 'til the next time we needed them. |
|
Quoted: They do, but the wick is Really thin. I've taken to bore a hole down the center and stuffing either real wicks from Hobby Lobby or elcheapo cotton tennis shoe laces. Works Ya, I've tried those candles and the wick sucks You can stick a cardboard match into and and it will burn good for a few hours, but you have to keep an eye on it.I found a bunch of those at K Mart a few years ago for $1 and bought a dozen; they are much better than the ones Dollar Tree stocks. FWIW Speed |

My camera shows that those Sunbeam AAs are depleted when they are new. They are the worst batteries I have ever tried. I think it is probably worth the extra few cents to buy the Kirkland batteries.
You do get what you pay for of course. I have a number of screwdrivers and pliers from the dollar store, and they do break under hard use. But they are only $1 so I don't get upset about it. It is nice to have such tools all over the house so you don't have to hunt them down when you need them, and I don't feel bad about lending them to my neighbors. But I wouldn't put such tools in my BOB. When you will not have backups, buy the best. |

You need to try out the 99 cent store. About 10X bigger with 10X more items. Huge selection including fruit and vegetables, canned goods, lunch meat, dairy etc. Great place to pick up expensive name brand lunch meat for a $1. http://www.99only.com/ 271 locations in California, Nevada, Arizona, and Texas. http://99only.com/applications/locator/index.php

My SO who is not on board and thinks I am a little crazy for only the small amount of ;camping gear; said she was in love with the dollar tree. She has to stay out of town for a few weeks and the dollar store was one of the closest around. "It has so many things I need." I did also get her to go shop at Aldis one day.
I am rebounding from some time without income and hope to restock the used assets. Thanks, nct |
