Sam's Club near where I live in Ohio has a 2000 watt Champion generator that purports to put out true sine waves.   I have hear several people speak highly of this brand of generator, but I would love to hear opinions.

It says on the box that it will run 9 hours on 1 gallon at 25% load. Its in a square plastic case. I should easily be able to run my refrigerator with it along with other small stuff. My HF generator can handle the little crap.

I don't own one Batman, but I remember a long thread on an active RV site where people were raving about them-I'll try to find it.

If I remember right the engines were clones of Honda OHV engines. Some people were bitching about the availability of spare parts, but considering the price why not buy a spare or two?

For me, the generator is a convenience item anyway. I would like something that will hold up, but I have a 5500 watt genny that is loud enough to wake the dead in California from my house, and one of the little HF versions we have all been buying up lately.

For the longest time I had my heart set on a Yamaha, but its a grand for 1800 watts. The honda isn't far behind for enough power to run my fridge for a few days.

ok, here is the deal.

the one sold at sams is a new product. it is very quiet, dependable, stackable, will run in tandem, has the eco throttle, and  i can lift it with one hand. its $499.  if it was out when i bought my Champion 3500/4000 RV model last year, i would have bought it instead. Champion is a first class company and recommend them to everyone. It is made in China by an american owned company. i wish it was made here, but like many other genny's it isnt.

Might want to look closer at the specs and see if it's rated for what you need.  It's rated for only 13.3amps.  Heck, my refrigerator pulls 16-18 amps on compressor startup.

That's a nice price and design.  I know several people who ahve the 3000w Champions and rave about them.

This particular model uses a Mitisubishi clone engine, and is the same engine that's also used on Champion's 1.5 KW conventional generator. It's capable of running considerably faster than 3600 RPM, so it produces more power in the inverter version.

Link to this particular generator? They make a few 2kw generators...

I might like an inverter version...

If it starts, runs, doesn't fry your electronics or blow up in a couple of hours, it's much better than not having one at all.

I'm all for buying decent gear, but lets face facts, not everyone can afford  the latest, greatest top of the line stuff.   Me, I've got a sump pump, well and a shit pump to feed power to.

Batman,

Go for the Yamaha and never look back. Visit US carburetion and get a tri-fuel unit. Their facility is “factory authorized” by Yamaha. Propane can be stored for a lifetime, get yourself some 100lb tanks. If the gas stations run dry and the natural gas stops, I’m good for 1 year thereafter (genset=daytime, battery bank=night).

Batman,

Are you on Natural gas? If so, you can tie into your existing pipes. I used top-of-the-line stainless flex pipe from GasTite……

No natural gas for me. None in my area that isn't tied to a well.

I do think the Yamaha is a great unit. I plan to rely more heavily on solar for longer term preps, so this generator is really just a stop gap measure and a mobile power station. It does not hold a huge place in my preps.

Honestly, I have other preps that I must spend big bucks on that have priority for me. If this cheaper genny gets me buy for a few occasional power outages and gets me through my supply of gas during the start of a real shtf, then it paid for itself. I just can't justify twice the money right now.

13.3 is identical to the Honda eu2000I. That wont run a refigerator?

It won't run mine.  I put the Kill-a-watt meter up to it thinking there was something wrong with the genny and the 5 year old fridge spikes at about 17amps on startup.  Using the EU2000i I hear the thing pulling a load and the compressor overload just clicks on and off.  But, if I run a EN2500 Honda generator, it works just fine.
Just doesn't make sense to me.
