Can you guys educate me on how to properly store coleman propane cylinders?

I've been meaning to buy a camp stove for a while, and just saw one for $10 at Kmart and decided to pick it up; I figure it's probably a lousy stove, but for $10 I figured it was worth trying.

Ideally I'd like to throw these in by BOB, stored in the back of my truck, but I'm worried heat will be an issue.

Stove, base, cylinder, and my messy desk:

I've got some stored in a reasonably cool shed (ie under 100* usually) and they're prob 10 or more years old and work fine.

I bought some brand new on sale and put them in the back seat. Worked for 8 hrs, came outside to my car full of propane and 4 out of 6 of them venting. I aired out by leaving the doors open for 10 minutes or so and everything was ok, but it might not have gone so well. yeah, lesson learned. Keep em away from heat

I purchased one from walmart in 1999.  It is still in the box.  I know, I know.  I need to get it out a play/use it.  I would pick up a package of 2 cylinders every pay week and after a while I had quite a few.  So my stash is 11 years old.  All of them have been kept in a climate controlled enviorment.  Do they still work?  If the factory seal has not been broken, I am sure that they are fine.

As to storing it in a vehicle.  I would not be comfortable with it.

+1 on storing in a car

The propane itself has no storage limits.  I have found the steel screw threads under the plastic cap prone to rust.  Also, every so often, after the first use.  The valve could leak and you will loose whats left in the can.

Store them in the garage with no problem. Have some that are 15yrs old. Put some grease on the threads then put the plastic cap back on.

do not store in car.

chapstick threads after use.....try not to loose plastic cap.

k-mart stove is great.....my Scout pack has 2 of them.....the 2 burner flat type.

Coleman works good.....I've refilled them a number of times....the valve seats go bad after a few times though.

The Benz-o- Matic tanks have the best seat on the valve......have one that has been refilled 6 or 7 times now.....smaller diameter....easier to store.....made a PVC rack for outside the Subaru....

Is the concern with vehicle storage that the tanks leak?

Increased temperature = increased pressure = exhaust valve bursts = vehicle full of propane
