I tried searching but didn't find much so I'll ask. Can you recommend me a good LED lantern. I don't want to spend a ton of money just looking for a decent light for average price.
The details: A few nights ago we lost power in a big rain storm, so I eventually fired up the generator to keep the sump pump and fridges running, etc. Well, I have some decent LED flashlights and LED headlights so had good light but one thing I didn't have was a lantern to give off some general light. I plan on using some candles and kero lanterns for some general light but with it being summer, I didn't want the heat. Just looking for some general suggestions. Are those LEDs at WalMart any good? Thanks in advance. |

Wallyworld has some from China that are $4 each. They can be taken apart and you can add your own shroud shading. They are not "good" but they light OK and are good for bathrooms and such. Colgmans has a similar, better built version for $9. (Target has them) Colman has one that is more expensive, but there was an extensive review in SF here. I think it was one of the flip-up models. Really though, they are cheap enough you should get four or five, use them a bit, and then get another one of the brand/model you like best. The emergency low cost and safe lighting options have VASTLY improved in the last couple of years. Heck, those "as seen on TV' button lights you can stick everywhere can be found in generic form for $1. (Cheaper than the batteries in them) |

This is my recent thread. I review the coleman and I get introduced to another very decent lantern. The coleman wins for the price.

I have a couple of these and like them alot. $7.00. I think this is the light a memeber did a test on to check out the run time, but it was over 30 days and I'm not for archive searching. ETA: The thread was over 30 days ago...not the run time. http://www.brightguy.com/images/bgimages/_bgimageslarge/ENEFL452WRBPl.jpg The Energizer Weather Ready LED Lantern is compact in size, but gives ample area light to light up a room - perfect to have on hand for emergency use or camping. Features of Energizer Weather Ready LED Lantern: • 8 premium Nichia® lifetime LEDs never need to be replaced • high mode, low mode and night light mode • built in reflector or unfold for 360 degree area light • easy grip handle swivels up and down • easy to use slide switch - select High, Low, Off or Night Light • powered by 4 D-cell alkaline batteries, not included • up to 245 hours of run time per set of batteries Those are usually $19.99. If I saw one for $7 I would have bough one just to play with. |

I have several of the china ones from wally world, ok for small area lighting such as a bathroom.
I don't have any of the EverReady but they look nice. Currently I have a Coleman crank led light that has the cell phone charger, and a FM radio, a little pricey at $44 but one minute of crank gives 30 minutes of light on low. Larger then the china units but much more light, and the charger output has uses also. I will tell you that this lantern on high hanging in a tent makes for a interesting show outside. Ask me how I know after watching my S/O changing while I was outside at night. |

RayOVac sportsman from Lowe's. I think it was $24. runs on Dcells. This, raovac sportsman extreme.........they are awsome and for 24.00 cant be beat....Hi , low, strobe.....put out a great deal of light....you wont regret D cells are a killer for me. I use eneloops for the ease of recharging. Rechargeable D cells are worth their salt are very expensive and take a lot time to charge. I can charge a set of 4 eneloops in 15 to 20 mins on my fast charger in an emergency. That is a weeks worth of light from each set of batteries and it takes no time at all. Very minimal generator time and not much fuss for the many lanterns I would be using. |

D cells are a killer for me. I use eneloops for the ease of recharging.. you can get adapters to run AAs in devices that take Cs or Ds. since you're running rechargeables the shorter runtime for the AAs won't be a big deal. not size/space efficent, but it will let you use a few more things. |

| I own a couple of the River Rock lanterns, bought at Target. Here's a review at Flashlight Reviews. They run on 4 AAs and sometimes Target puts sale prices on their flashlights. Some dealers will sell them cheaper than that. I own others like the Coleman, but these are pretty sweet. |

WalMart sells the Energizer lanterns like the one listed above, but also one that advertises 500 hours of battery, the multi finction lantern, which I have. it has 3 light settings: incan, white LED, and a super dim yellow LED. on the LED setting, its super bright. well built light, a little heavy though, runs on D cells (i think) but overall very impressed. there was a review on here about it a while back where a guy actually ran it for more than the 500 hrs listed. overall, very impressed. especially for less than $20, which included batteries.

Black Diamond – Apollo. It has an aux power jack, a great feature. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/mr_joshua/1552013.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/mr_joshua/DSCN7842.jpg It also has very, very good light quality. Much softer than many of the lanterns I have seen. It also has a 5 lumen low setting that gives it a great run time. Its a nice light for a lot of reasons. $50 and worth it. It was mentioned in my thread about Coleman lanterns, that are also great lights for the money. |
