Hi there.
I have been lurking for quite a while and I have not seen any info on fish ponds/tanks for a possible food source. Is this a viable option? If there is info about this somewhere I missed please guide me.

So my situation on land for BOL
I will not live there full time

I have a 5 acre plot outside a sudo country town. It has direct access to a busy FM road (Pop 8000) 2 acres are fenced with "hog" wire 5ft with 2 rows of barbed wire on top. It is a part of 60 acres divided into 5 ac lots.  It has water, elec and a large aerobic septic. For the most part it is a field. It is low lying, the 2 ac puddles is some areas and needs grading raised. Other area I am wanting to put in a 1 ac tank and the other areas raise grade with dirt from tank and have a garden and small orchard.

Now I am building my initial food preps and making plans for the near future to possibly start these improvments. Do you think I should move forward or try to find something more remote and possibly treed?  My main concern is it is on a busy road and is wide open.

Opinions?
Ideas?

Land is always good.
However, sounds like a lot of work (especially the grading) and in the end, not much (if any) privacy.

Probably don't need to tell you it's HOT here in Texas and you are going to need some shade.
Trees are welcome relief, even the crappy ash junipers we have here in the Hill Country.
You could plant some trees, to give you shade and privacy, however it will be expensive and take a lot of time to grow.

Another problem with 5acs, since I am not sure what is nearby, would be future development - meaning - businesses and/or sub-divisions which may build too close for comfort.
We have 10acs and I still have that concern.
We live off a pretty busy State Highway, but with the trees and brush, no one can see where we live or even if anyone lives here. Cannot see our neighbors.
Another concern would be traffic noise if the FM road is very busy.

My best friend lives in a similar location to what you describe (near Alvin).
Flat, few trees, used to be farmland. Lucky he likes his neighbors.
OTOH, his BOL is here with me.

I would try to find another location.

personally, it sounds like a lot of work for a piece of ground that doesn't offer as much as one would hope...

When we started looking for a BOL, I thought 20 acres was tops...then the more I looked at land that had been infringed apon, that jumped to 40 acres, then 50...You need to look at all possible sides of it...easements, access, location with regards to main roads - for visibility, looters, hoard, chances you'll get your firing line set up and a new development will start up next door!

I'm a big advocate for being out in the hinterboonies...off the beaten path..but that adds more to the equation. The further out you go, the less utilities you can get and the more costly those you can get become. Also, it can become an issue that if it is too far away from you or not easy to get to, you won't go out and work on it as much.

Fencing already in place and a good working aerobic septic system are big pluses, but I'd look for more as far as distance from the highway, cover, and higher ground.

Good Luck!
