There are two Garmin etrex units on the Equipment Exchange right now for around 80 bucks.  Perfect for what you want and a good way to break into GPS.  I think that is a good deal.

its an older model but the Garmin 60Cx or 60CSx can be had for well under $300 and is well worth it. one of the best GPS's Garmin has made.

If you are looking for the mac daddy GPS with a sexy woman's voice telling you when to turn, then yes, you may spend a bit of coin.  But there are some good deals out there for a basic GPS.  If you want a sort of hands free unit, try one of the Garmin Foretrex devices.  It mounts on your wrist and give you the basic nav functions.  Search around a bit.

The only thing with handheld GPS's is, they'll sell you a unit cheap, but the maps on them are deliberately pretty terrible these days.  Only major multilane highways, no lesser state roads anymore, so you end up having to spend another $100 on map software, and $20 on a mini SD card to hold the maps.   Years ago on earlier units, though the receiving capabilites were worse under foliage, they came with good enough roads on them that they were actually useable without spending another $100

If you want to go real cheap, here's an older Garmin unit, which still has better maps, and an updated, higher sensitivity antenna.   $122.00  It won't give you directions, but will show all roads, and let you geocache.

I like those? I have a etrex and I am looking at upgrading. I like the topo feature and I saw one somewhere with xm weather but I would like a larger, color screen with more options. pretty much like this

Basspro, Cabelas and REI had the Garmin 60csx on sale for right around 200 bucks a little over a month ago. A bunch of guys including myself got one.

I believe they are coming out with a higher end model than that. It may even be out already.

Shop around for prices and look for the Garmin 60 CSX.  I got mine at Cabelas on a clearance sale for $200.  It's one of the highest rated/most popular models at geocaching.com.  It's now being phased out for the 62 series from Garmin, so sales are popping up.

It comes with a base map that, as mentioned previously, leaves a lot to be desdired.  Check out GPS File Depot.  They have free topo maps to download that rival anything Garmin puts out.

This.

Get the 60 CSx.  Worth every penny and more.  Will do geo, driving, walking.  Good for woods and road.

You also have to figure on dropping another $100 on maps.  The unit will come with a US basemap that has interstates and US routes on it, but no state or local roads.

For the 60 CSX you want City Navigator North America.

the free maps on gpsdepot.com are awesome for geocaching. You aren't going to be navigating with a handheld, you can get a cheap nav unit for close to the price of the maps.

I have a vista that is awesome. Great battery life. I wish the 60sx, or whatever it is, was on sale at the time. I would be tempted to get it anyway but I just don't need another handheld.

They are useful for a lot more than geocaching too! Make sure and try out whatever you get at home, so you will be able to easily use the features you want when you want to.

The basic Garmin etrex is like $80 (amazon), and it will do what you need for Geocaching as well as most other purposes.  It is accurate to within about 12 or 15 feet.

An etrex that is USB compatible is $114 (amazon).  Having the USB makes it easier to input waypoints.

Get the 60csx and free map downloads. I've never paid for a map and have gotten detailed topo maps of nearly every area I travel.

You can get this model in color (HC) on amazon for the same price or a little less. I just picked up the HCx (memory card slot)on craigslist today for $115, so check there too.

I was reading reviews about these and I read that the 60 series is out dated. I thinbk it was REI.com somewhere. I will look for a 60csx or cx.  Also thanks for the free topo maps.

anyone know if the 60 series can accept maps of other countries?

I have a 60CSx.  I emailed Garmin and asked them about maps for western europe –– Germany, Austria, France, GB, ...

They said they have the street maps, but no topo.  I couldn't find any on-line either.  Please let me know if you have better success than I...
