I have a lot of gear I would like to put into Pelican style cases. Sizes vary but the price of these things is too much! I could easily sink $2000 into a few cases but do not want too and won't. What is a good alternative? Thought about surplus cans but the steel is pretty heavy too.

Might be able to find some STARLIGHT cases, same as pelican more or less, just keep checking surplus stores in the area and online. I agree Pelican is expensive. but they work and do what they need to.

I'm a dealer for Pelican / Hardigg (Storm) cases...

If you decide to go that route, I'll hook you up.  Just send me a PM or email.

Depending on the equipment maybe something like this would suit your needs a little better.

go to the surplus place north of ogden(forgot name). They have surplus sealable military med chest and other plastc type containers. Very large and for <100 very practical

Pelican cases are worth the money.   Spend it if your gear is worth protecting.

I have a Storm Case, now owned by Pelican,  model 3100. Works great. So does my Starlight case. I prefer the latches on the Storm case better though.

Storm 3100

If you call Starlight, they may have a few seconds sitting around. These tend to go very quickly. .

I have ammo cans a few old pelicans I have bought used off some sites.  I just watch and see what people want for prices and as long as the damage does not hurt the structural integrity of the case I don't care.

I have not really decided on foam yet, I have a memory foam topper sitting around for car camping and it is really amusing to stuff it into the case and consider using it for the case.

I basically only want the ammo cans or pelican stuff for when it will be out in the weather and I want what is inside to stay waterproof and dustproof and what not.

Some of the other cases may also be good, I ran into some used pelicans and just went ahead and headed that direction and I am darn happy with them.

For something really valuable I might go ahead and consider a new pelican but I kind of wanted a big pelican I could put on the back of the quad or on a hitch packer or on a trailer or on a roof rack and not worry about.

Here's how I convinced myself to go Pelican.

The key is to not worry about what the case costs...but to think about what it's going to be protecting.

If you're just going to throw an iPod (or anything easily replaceable) in there...then no, a $150.00 case is not worth it.

If you're in my situation and your cases are going to be protecting expensive camera equipment and/or firearms...then it's worth it's weight in gold to me.

I've seen what people (baggage handlers) can do to cheap cases and suitcases...I would not chance it.

If you're looking simply for protection from dings and dents at home and in the car...a cheaper case would probably work OK.

I bought a Pelican case back in the day before the web.  The choices then were Zero-Haliburton or Pelican.  My case has done very good for what I have asked it to do.  Cost averaged over time I have less than $10 dollars per year invested now.  I'll probably buy more as I have the funds or as I find them on sale.  I like my equipment to work without drama, and this case has worked for me.
