I thought you might find this interesting.
Every December we buy several bushels of fruit and divide it up among the people here at work. Sort of a Christmas tradition. Anyway the "Tweeter" cut a grapefruit in half for my breakfast this morning. The grapefruit, which had been in the root cellar 6 months and some change was as fresh and juicy as the day it went underground. The apples passed away last month, and the potatoes that are left from the fall have 6" sprouts but are still edible. Kohlrabi looks like long green raisins and the country ham looks like it did the day we put it in the cellar. Onions and squash lasted about 3 months before they went toes up. I also keep my home made beer in the root cellar, that way it is partially chilled and most kinds will keep close to a year. Course that sort of depends on how much company that we get. |
