Does the junk silverware at the thrift stores have much silver in it?
I was looking for a slotted serving spoon for my wife. I ran across what looks like an old silver baby spoon and some other items that said silver plated. Do they typically have any value for "junk silver?" I've never bought any gold or silver and thought of SF right away. Am I on to something or should I just leave it alone? I did buy the bag of misc. spoons that had the old baby spoon and two others that say "silver plated." Grand total $3.00 Did I waste my $$$ ? |

If it is just plated the value is not much.
If it is sterling, the silver in it (92.5% IIRC) is worth about 80% of spot. If it is sterling it will be stamped in some way either with a hallmark or it may say sterling. It's unlikely they have any collector value, although you never know. |

roger that
stay w/ the sterling, forks, spoons, etc knives, candlesticks, and "other" beefy items are usually filled w/ potting –– their weight is deceptive silver plated = junk you will prolly pay for the sterling at shoppes and swaps, but may get lucky at garage sales |

Typically much better made then the SS stuff I've seen. |

Its also marked 925 sometimes, there may be more markings. Also, dig through the ugly jewelry, tie tacks and cuff links too. I've found a few sterling odds and ends in there. |
