OK the dollar is worthless and we are now using our silver to make purchases, so lets say I use an American Eagle to buy something and the price is $5.00. I use my AE and silver is at say $20.00 an ounce, what do i get back from the person I buy from? Do I use all of the AE and purchase more goods , what would they give me back for change? The dollar is worthless and other moderen coinage is not going to be worth much is it? This is where I get confused if I had to do this.

this product (from the Northwest Territorial Mint) might help with that situation, but I go for silver dimes and quarters....

+1  smaller coins. Or coins of other metal types, like nickels or copper pennies.

Just be wary about thinking of things in dollars for when the dollar is worthless. If it's really 'worthless' then something that is $5 (say a quarter ounce of silver) might cost $500 to buy when the dollar is worthless, and your 1oz of silver will be $2000. Whatever replaces the USD as money will become your new measuring stick.

This answer.  Or just wait until you need at least $20 of goods.

People used to wait until they needed a solid amount of items before they 'went to town.'

At first blush and if I were a seller, I'd advise you to find some more stuff to buy to make up the difference. "We don't give change here."

me thinks that gold, silver, bullets, etc will be used as barter between individuals or at the trading post.
one can sell their stash or redeem for a form of currency to be used at the store

just for fun, I would diversify and have a stash of pre-65 coinage also....

If the economic conditions  deteriorate to the point of currency failure, you are not going to be buying  your girl friend  a 2 dollar tube of lip gloss at walmart, nor feeding your kid a happy meal at mickeyfuckindees.
Nobody is going shopping down at the mall.
Figure an ounce of gold will buy enough grain to feed your family for a year.
a 1/4 Kruggerrand might trade for  a Barrel of  heating oil.
Let us say, for example that You need some TIG  welding done to patch your broken (.................) You may try to bargain with  Whiskey,   factory .308,  or a roll of silver dollars.
My shop rate is 5 silver ounces per hour.
Top shelf Vodka is an alternate.

When no one wants your PAPER fiat, the entire paradigm will have shifted. some will adapt.

I wonder why you couldn't use a measured length of say 12ga. copper wire that weighed the equivalent of a penny? It would be kinda like carrying a tube full of little copper rods.

Alternately, there are a couple of companies out there that sell silver shot, and you could just bring a small powder scale with you and weigh out the exact amount of shot to equal the amount you wish to purchase.

"OK the dollar is worthless"
" use an American Eagle to buy something and the price is $5.00"
"silver is at say $20.00 an ounce"

Do you see a contradiction in those statements?

Forever postage stamps, but if the post office isn't even operating you will not be doing your shopping like you do now. When you see anything useful you will buy as much as you can just for trading. You will be shopping like some of us in rural areas do,once a month. People that shop in little dabs all week long will be in for a very steep learning curve.

Those who do a lot of trading and intend to make a living doing it will have some means of giving change or will soon be out of business. Candy bars peanuts beers and other small high demand items will be easily used as change. Look close to the cash register at any convience store and you will get many ideas.
