Nutnfancy is a producer of videos on youtube. He produces videos on subjects that could well be of interest to many of us here. He reviews guns, knives, multi-tools, outdoor gear, and other nifty things.
I can't tell you I agree with him 100% but mostly I think he has a lot to say that is worth at least listening to. He seems to have a bit of an obsession on knives and multi-tools. I can't say I have ever watched his gun reviews or shooting segments, but I think I have seen most of the other gear related segments. He started a new series on what he calls the urban survival kit. I didn't like the first half hour of rambling philosophy, but once he started taking his USK apart and explaining some of his thinking, I thought it was worthwhile. The first segment on his USK is 48 minutes. I would skip most of the first 2/3 of it if you are not interested in rambling philosophy. The way he is going it may take him another 2 hours to finish. You might want to take a look at some of his FAK videos as well. I think he has done a good job of putting together some pretty decent ones, and goes into some detail on how he came to pick certain items over others. As a special bonus, he has a dog he takes with him on hikes into the mountains. I always like to see a nice dog get some attention. I will warn you that like many other youtube videos, his videos are not well edited for time. A lot of his ten minute videos could well have been edited down to 4 or 5 minutes without the video losing anything. |
|
i have watched several of his reviews, he does a decent job of being fair(unlike gun rags where last months items are crap compared to this months items...) but he says "uh" way too much and he has a little too much of a survival leaning and too much opinion vs fact or data.

He posts here from time to time. Alot of people in GD give him shit for being a gear whore. I did not know that. I guess I do not really keep track of people's names that are posting since they are not real names anyway. Nutnfancy - don't get too big of a head just cause I said something nice about you. |

| I just watched his Urban Survival video and thought that he really missed the target on this one. A 23lb urban survival kit? Is he serious? When I go backpacking for 3-4 days my gear (including tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, etc) only weighs 30-35 lbs. He had way too much stuff in that bag for an urban survival kit. I don't think you need an entire cookset, water filter, etc. in an urban survival kit. |

Think of it this way. company xyz drops 1500$ their cost of swag to pogues to "review" on their work bench. They make 8k in sales....over 6 months becuase of that investment....the "reviewers" are happy cuz they got free swag.....everyone wins except for the small guy making a really great product..who cant lay out that product with out hurting at the bank..... to make a point about it...... go to you tube and search out maxpedition gear reviews.......look how many have pop'd up in the months from sept to now on all the gun channels and "survival" channels. it's all about that $$$$ . Reason why i refuse to put adsense,or do reviews of shit i aint bought myself or charge folks to download my channels views or revenue sharing or whatever youtube calls it. Thats if i had a channel.... |

I am going to hold judgement until I see the whole series though. I don't see how you can cart this around with you on a day to day basis, so I am curious where he thinks you should store it. I did get a kick out of the 8 ounce container of bear spray for small riots. When I first saw the title of the video i was thinking a fanny pack sized thing. |

not worth listening too. most survival stuff comes down to common sense of which he has very little. he is not a "grounded" individual. Why do you think he has very little common sense? In what way is he not grounded? Well, he is NorCal , bay area ––- that explains it. JK –– i actually like most of the reviews of his that i have seen (i've on;y seen a couple though) he is a little wordy |

IMHO Nutnfancy makes you think. He's a little long-winded and thin-skinned but when he's on subject its food for thought. Most of the other gear reviews on YouTube are worthless tripe on equipment that hasn't been put into use. I tend to view Nutnfancy's reviews more his perspective on what works and how a piece of gear relates to his idea of utility. It's not really a review of a certain piece of gear but more of the reasoning as to why a selection is made.
He has qualified camping experience but he'll tell you he is not a minimalist and packs for convenience and comfort. He tries to downplay the gearwhore tag but at least he explains his perspective in detail. I don't want to pack as heavy and won't pay what some of that gear costs but use the information to make my own decision regarding alternatives. His info has been key to my choices of cover, cooking and backpacks. There's a reason some gear is so pricey, it's the best at what it does. Sure, a GI surplus Alice pack may function as well as a Kelty or North Face, but when they weigh half as much, it's a serious consideration. I stay away from his reviews relative to firearms and knives because there are others more qualified offering ideas and info and I'm pretty set in my choices of this type of equipment. I haven't looked at his urban survival series and I want to say he's not as qualified to offer a perspective on this matter as others, including myself, but you never know when you're going to pick up a piece of useful info. |

I'd rather die than watch one of his videos for 45 minutes. He is an ego maniac, that represents opinion as fact. He could easily condense his 45 minute videos down to 5 minutes, and get the same point across. His arrogance is unjustified. I find the opposite true. He regularly states this is only his opinion and that he is telling everyone what works best for his system. |

Most of the other gear reviews on YouTube are worthless tripe on equipment that hasn't been put into use. NO..say it aint so. You mean that brand new looking 3 day pack and knife or xyz gear is right out of the package? ![]() i dont have any issue with the guy, except he is geeky. thats about it. If what he is doing wakes a person up to get prepared or to spend that extra little cash to not buy that POS tube tent form walamrt then im all for it lol. But it is the internet after all..... i had some guy just 2 days ago cuss my channel out becuase i pronouced molle as ( mole-ley) vs mah-ly ![]() I look at it like i do here...if you dont have any post/movies to back yourself up...your a freaking retard! |

I've never watched more than a couple minutes of his videos but they seemed o.k. to me.
Youtube is an interesting place. Lots of CRITICS with few DOERS. People leave stupid comments about the dumbest shit- dialect, etc. God forbid you use the same word more than once in the making of a 10 minute video. The earth worshipers are the worst, most have never experienced on a mid size scale growing food but a "book" told them that if you ever use any commercial fertilizer that NOTHING would ever grow there- actually had some tard tell me that! Had to make a video to prove him wrong. Then people wonder why folks don't jump through hoops working on putting up free videos. Youtube changed all their formats, etc. Sometimes it takes a full day to upload a video only to have it show as "failed" upon return. Anybody else here have an unpaid job you worked hard at while people kicked you in the nuts while you were doing it? Think about that before blasting this guy. |
|
most of his gear reviews are worthless. case in point his molle review where he complains about it flopping around and he doesn't know how to weave it.
he has several other gun/training videos i have seen where it is blatantly obvious he has no clue what he is talking about. Take his reviews and information with a grain of salt. I have seen better info given from gun store employees in general. he IS NOT an expert. |

I cannot comment on his survival related videos, but his weapons related stuff shows a lack of ground combat training. It may work for some but some of the TTP he shows or trains too will get you killed against a competent enemy. I have not seen any of his combat training videos, did not even know he made any. And not being an expert on combat tactics like you are, I would not know whether they were any good or not. I think he would be a lot easier to take for a lot of people if he edited his videos more ruthlessly. Most of them are way too long for what he has to say, whether you agree with what he is saying or not. While it is unfair to judge the content based on how it is presented, it is very hard for most people not to do so. I will say I appreciate his refusal to bow to the less weight is better hiking crowd. I really do not care how long it takes me to get somewhere or how little I was able to carry in getting there. I'd rather be comfortable and enjoy the walk, and if I have to take a break now and then, so be it. I used to sometimes carry a thermos of coffee with me. That would probably make the lighter is better crowd have a heart attack. |

I wonder why people even would; what makes a person want to post a video them doing just about anything? Is it an ego thing? I personally do my movies to help people prepare. Problem is like anything on the web.everyone thinks they are an expert. You title a movie " BASIC basket weaving" and tell your viewers up front that it is a "BASIC way to start basket weaving" you will end up with 50 comments form people telling you how to do it better. Maybe 1 of those 50 has a channel dedicated to "basket weaving". The rest are a mix of good jobs and you sucks. At times i have sat back and asked myself why i even do the movies . But then i look at the amount of views the movies have and gotta think that if even 10% did something to be better prepared ,ive helped. have your ever read /viewed something on the web and learned something from it? Thats why folks put the stuff u p. not just becuase of "ego" |
| Protus, I have watched all your videos. I enjoy them. You have a humble attitude and make suggestions. Nutnfancy has a tendency to defend himself by bragging how many videos he has on youtube, and that his critiques have none. I could post a million videos on youtube of me masturbating. It still would not make me porn star. It would just make me a guy with a sore hand, and too much time on my hands. |

Wrong... he goes to lengths to tell folks "he is not a tactical guru". I enjoy his videos for some entertainment value, some information, and just the fact that he is at least trying to educate the masses about the good and bad elements of gear. Its not like going to a magpul dynamics class, and no one is representing it as such. He constantly reiterates that these are his opinion and YMMV in essence. Just my .02 |

Just my .02 I never heard him say he was not a tactical guru, but he is clear that he is talking about what works for him and why it works for him. In fact he often points out reasons that others might have a different opinion. A fair number of his videos have text comments noting where he made a mistake in what he said in the video. He does come across as a bit of a nerd, which being as I am pretty nerdly, I appreciate. Plus, he has a nice dog that he brings hiking with him. Can't help but like a nice dog. Not a tactical dog either. Also something I appreciate. |

I skipped the BOB bag videos. I have just seen way too many to think there is anything new. The grain mill stuff was interesting. |
I watched a few of his videos and they seem ok but in two of the ones I've seen he used WD40 on his saw, like every couple of minutes when cutting down a tree. Said he always carried WD40 with him when he went camping/backpacking. I know thats a small thing but I thought it was goofy.
Other than the WD40 fetish and him looking like a dork his videos are entertaining. |
|
I watched all the videos he made. (It took some time. I like his videos, he is ok, but there are several things I don't like. I think his sister started a war, she wrote creepy messages to people and now the Youtube has a special pro/anti NutnFancy drama team. That's really irritating, when I want firearm and knife reviews and people post childish hater comments there. I don't know if he is really a former military, but he knows about the tactical gears, knives and firearms. |
|
He's Airforce and has a few former military friends he tapes.
From what I've heard, WD40 really helps reduce friction in sawing. I'm not too sure about his preferences on large survival knives. He dislikes the axe but most bushcrafters think a hatchet or small axe in combo with a small knife is a better combination. I wonder what he thinks of that. He has all the gear but it does seem he relies on technology and equipment. Say he did have to bug out to the mountains, can he survive after using all his consumables? I would like to see a gear reviewer from someone like Cody Lundin, someone who might survive without any equipment, but Cody hasn't been posting for a while. |

Yes it does. Anyone who saws wood with a hand saw should get a small can of wd40. It makes the sawing a whole lot easier. I use it when pruning either on the saw blade or the pruning shears. I'm not too sure about his preferences on large survival knives. He dislikes the axe but most bushcrafters think a hatchet or small axe in combo with a small knife is a better combination. I wonder what he thinks of that. I am not qualified on bushcrafting enough to know. I see youtube videos where people say they carry them but I can't recall ever seeing anyone use one in a situation where they could not have accomplished the task easier with a knife and/or a small saw. Its a lot of weight to carry around unless you have a use for it.
He has all the gear but it does seem he relies on technology and equipment. Say he did have to bug out to the mountains, can he survive after using all his consumables?
I have never heard him say that is his goal. He seems mostly interested in being able to enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and camping in the wild in a safe and comfortable way. The survival aspect of it is mostly oriented toward dealing with an emergency. I would like to see a gear reviewer from someone like Cody Lundin, someone who might survive without any equipment, but Cody hasn't been posting for a while.
I doubt many of us, including so called experts in the field, could survive very long without at least some equipment. Personally, I am absolutely convinced that the overwhelming majority of people who think they could survive in the wilderness living off the land style, would be dead within a few months if they were dumb enough to try and stick it out that long. Its completely unrealistic, especially on your own. I watched the third installment of his series on what he calls an urban survival kit. A lot of stuff he had in his USK matches a lot of what I used to cart with me when i traveled. I got a kick out of his suggestion that if you work in a high rise that it might be wise to consider stowing a parachute in your office and learning to use it in case you need to exit out the 100th floor window. I have often thought that I might do that if I was forced to work in such a place. I could quibble on his choice of tools, but it matches what I lugged around for many years close enough that I think he is closing in on having it right. Of course it is always easier to agree with someone else when their opinion is close to your own. |

I we've explained 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 times to viewers , that it is a joke from our 1st movie we put out in 07..IRRC by movie #4 we made we had to explain the joke..,becuase the amount of comments about it were crazy(maybe close to 500 emails about it). Then again recently in the "myths" movie where many thought that me and RH from survivalreportblog were the same guy online( like troll accounts and such) we had to explain the joke and who we are again. It got to where it was a joke on the viewer and not us. " Oh here we are in sunny idaho ( in december) ...lotta snow here( while next to a palm tree on the beach).." Even now weekly we get comments and emails asking where in Idaho we are. So its a joke that we cant get away from and at times...it still gets tossed into the films, |
|
I did not quite get the joke either. It must have seemed funny to the guy that made it the first time, but it just confuses the people viewing the video. Some things just do not translate well from joking around among a bunch of buddies to video that is viewed by people who have no clue who or what you are.

I think most members here on the this forum are gear queers( to include myself) he may be the queen but he needs to be to cover the vast array of stuff. That being said I watch his video and give him thumbs up for trying to be informative and help other people out. |

I don't mind his videos. I don't think he's an ego maniac at all. He comes across as a little geeky like some of you have said, but there's nothing wrong with that. Yeah, the videos could be a little shorter to speed things up.
But, he isn't saying he's some retired Navy Seal and you should listen to his word as gospel. He always states that its his opinion and your mileage might vary. |
