so i am sitting here at work scanning arfcom and my coworker asks me about ffl transfers. no problem I think as I tell him where the cheaper places to go are. he then asks me if I do FFL (i am the gun nut at work, its a reasonable question), no I reply though I have thought about it to get some dealer rates etc. maybe even get some extra ammo cheaper from the manufacturer.
well you know so and so (i work with him regularly). he has 6months of MRE, a safe room and enough ammo to fight the Russians now i know there is another "prepper" here.

I can't tell you the importance of networking carefully. I work in an office of about 450 and most people know each other by at least names, if not much better. A few people know I enjoy shooting and they will occasionally ask me about "what pistol should I buy?" or "Who should I buy from?" ect. Well, someone I thought was cool, while I wasn't at work, told a large group (40 maybe) that I owned some 40 or 50 guns, ammo to start WW3 and was a total right wing domestic terrorist type. Imagine my shock when I show up to work and random people are asking me how many firearms I own!
First, let me say. None of it is true. I own no where near 50 firearms or a truck load of ammo. Yes, I'm a Republican, as are many on this site; but I am a law abidding citizen and everything I own is 100% legal. But it doesn't matter, the damage is done. I just pray the ATF doesn't show up. So, Opsec people. Opsec. You never know who will screw you. Jeremy S. |
| I was sitting around with a group of friends and neighbors over the holiday weekend one evening, and I overhear one of the say " ... oh yeah, he can break out those four drums of flour ... " They were apparently talking about another one of my neighbors. I didn't even know he was a prepper. Now everyone knows. At least I know they'll stop at his house first when they're hungry ... |

If you have any friends who are UPS or FedX drivers you will find what a dream OPSEC really is. Unless you pay in cash & pick up your goods in person you have little OPSEC. Local shops also soon learn who their good customers are and who knows how many people they tell about your regular purchases. Word travels fast in gunshop BS sessions.
We can do our best but don't dismiss the reality of modern life with security cameras, credit card records and the huge data bases of consumer information. Red |
| On OPSEC...I concur with RedWoods. Also consider that ARFCOM admin did an IP trace to show that a member here was not from the state he said he was (a whole separate story re:In Range). So unless you're using a good randomizing proxy, an anonymizer, or using the public library, it's not too hard to figure out who anybody is and where they live. Just sayin'.... |

In my company I'm the "go to" guy for everything: Tools, bandaids, burn cream, superglue, splinter forceps...you name it. After the 2008 ice storm OPSEC got blown to hell when I got the whole company back up and running within 24 hours. The accounting department wanted to know where the hell the three Honda generators, emergency lighting, and deep cycle batteries and inverters came from. I couldn't exactly lie, so I had to tell them that all this stuff came from my house.
While I saved the company tens of thousands of dollars in lost revenue there were certainly some raised eyebrows in that I had enough personally owned backup infrastructure to support a company with 175 full-time employees

I will only say that as a home-based FFL I am amazed at what our customers tell us. These aren't people who have purchased/transferred several firearms from us, either. Many are folks we're seeing for the first time.
The funniest thing is that the cops/gov't employees are the worst at keeping their mouths shut. |

So, Opsec people. Opsec. You never know who will screw you. Jeremy S. I always deny that I own firearms of any sort, and reply that only the military and the police should have guns. I have been known to do this while standing there with a gun plainly in view on my hip. |

Heck, I don't even know if my brother-in-law preps. Wow, it just occurred to me, I don't even know if my own brother preps! And they don't know that I do.
All they know is that I have a gun or two - maybe a 10/22 and a .38
I have a small network of others near me, that I have met and cultivated relationships with long before I let them in on ANY of the preps I have. The wife, who is on-board with prepping-still doesn't know all that I've got stocked up from before we married - she'll get a surprise when she opens the storage locker! |

I would watch what I tell that dude with the big mouth. Loose lips sink ships. or just get your house robbed. The guy across the street from me gets big enough UPS deliveries that the truck backs up to his garage 2-3x a week, right at 5:30 in the evening. His house got broken into over the holiday and I really think that is the reason why. We've not had a single home robbery since I moved to the neighborhood 3.5 years ago. |

Careful, there is more than one gun nut in my area ( and they work gunshops, which is that much more scary), that have the mentality along the lines of shoot and take what you need when SHTF. This is news? There are a bunch of people like that on arfcom. And they are in the SF not jsut gd. |

Now that I work in corrections every one of my co-workers who is in security is trained to use a 38 special revolver and a mini 14 in 223.
I am out in redneck ville where people think you are strange if you don't go hunting. Due to not having any place for a freezer I don't go hunting, but they consider me strange for many reasons anyway. As far as overall preps go, I decided to just let folks know I had all sorts of stuff up for sale because I am moving and folks stopped wondering about much of anything where I am concerned. |
