You tubed this guy and his story looks awesome. Has anyone got these DVDs and are they worth it !!? Thanks |

I agree; I bought all three DVDs and the frozen north was also very good. It's always been a fascinating story for me. I wish I had a fraction of those skills (I'm working at it though) Quoted:
It's a good dvd and I liked it. Watching him tramp around in the woods is very relaxing. His cabin building skills are awesome! |

I watched it again Friday night for the umpteenth time. I've always wondered how many bears he actually had to kill in all those years. I'm thinking he had a stack of hides stashed somewhere.
I wished I had his recipe for that ram stew. It looked pretty good with all the fixens he added. |

I have two dvds and his book, not sure about the 3rd dvd someone mentioned above but I bought my stuff years ago so there might be another one out there.
Well worth the price for the first main dvd and the book. The 2nd dvd is also good but is not all about proeneke. Still worth the price but want to be up front about what is on the dvd. I enjoy watching the dvds and reading the book but I always keep in mind the float plane bringing in supplies and also the extra cabin that he stayed in while building his cabin. I am astounded by how he made the stuff he made and I like how he just made his handles once he got there instead of carrying that weight up there in the plane. Anyway, get at least the main dvd and the book, they kind of complement each other. After seeing the first dvd I would have bought the 2nd dvd anyway and I am not off to see what the 3rd dvd might be. |

I've both vids and the book. Dick was an amazing man who lived enough for two or three lifetimes. He didn't go to AK until he was about 50. This is a link to much more of his journals written just as he did. The first book was edited some which Dick didn't like. I like how he took a Bic pen and rigged it so it was full of ink because the standard Bic ran out too fast for him. He liked to write. http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/lacl/proenneke.pdf Once you start learning about Proenneke, you may start down a path to doing things the way they used to be done. A better way in lots of regards in my opinion. I would suggest you read Horace Kephart's "Camping and Woodcraft" as well as Nessmuk's "Woodcraft and Camping". There are many others out there, but these are some of the best in my opinion. I intend to make the back pack trip from Lake Clark to Twin Lakes one day. Probably with my boy when he's old enough, to see Dick's cabin for myself. Be careful. This stuff is addicting. |
| Gread DVD..... somehow my step-mom is related to him. In fact, she and my dad took a 6week long trip this summer to Alaska, and flew in for a two day stay at the cabin site! They were not able to stay in the cabin, but tented near it and said it was really cool to see firsthand how he lived. |

Amazing guy and experience. His ability to video himself was flat frikkin amazing in addition to the skills he demonstrates. Really takes you to a different way of thinking about life and how self-sufficiency is a lifesyle and not just a weekend gig in the woods. |
| I first found out about this guy on PBS one night and watched all of alone in the wilderness despite the stupid hour long pauses inbetween. I ended up getting the book and all three movies and loving them. He made me want to learn how to do things for myself. Id love to live out in the woods somewhere beautiful because of him. |
