Does anyone pack these in your gear bag? I would love to get some for a decent price as I don't see them being sale in bulk anymore. Feel free to chime in if you know there are better fuel out there that's compact and lightweight for the great outdoors. Thanks.

i carry 1-3 bars in my BOB and part of my ghb for back ups to back ups. they burn good. i carry them only becuase of the wet weather. least then i can use them to keep damp wood burning if tinder is all soaked.

Pretty much same as P above, but I also have a 5 gallon bucket of them in home stores for long term usage.

I think Emergency Essentials still carries them. I bought 300 of them for $100.

I use a canteen cup and stove now. It works well.

This makes great sense... I have about a dozen bars, and although you might be able to warm up a can o beans with one, i think it's a great benefit to starting / sustaining a fire in a damp environment. the ones i've played with burn bright blue for about 12 min.

I almost went with trioxane, but read somewhere here that the powder/residue was toxic? Anyone know if this is true?

I ended up cutting up some of the commercial fire starter logs into smaller chunks.

I had heard that Esbit tabs burn a lot better. Any truth to this?

There's another thread here about the fuel gel sold at Walmart (and many other places - I got it at Lowe's).  It's a tube about 16oz for $6 or so.  I suspect that this gel is the same thing as in the new .mil starters.  Perhaps going to a drug store and getting some of those really small travel shampoo containers and using the gel for BOB's and for emergency car kits.

Same here, I still have about 125 packages from the order I placed with Sportsmens Guide. I split 300 packages of three bars each with my parents. Good stuff, but I did notice the size of the bars that I ordered from CTD were larger than the bulk stuff from SG.

Edited for spelling and still screwed it up

Until I picked up some propper Edbit tablets to accompany my Esbit Stove, I carried Trioxane tablets to complement it. They worked well- a single tablet is about perfect for heating up a canteen cup of soup or whatever.

I still carry the Trioxane tabs to help with starting and maintaining damp wood. Can also be helpful when you really want to get something started quick on brisk morning. And, if I ever ned to, I can always use them in my stovre too.
