I've watched this show or one like it before.  They say it happens every 100,000 years or so, and as it happens the last time it blew was over 100,000

years ago.  For many this will be a TEOTWAWKI event.  I believe they said ash will scatter as far west as WI, IL, AR, etc.  It won't be good.  Hopefully it

blows long after I'm gone from this planet.

I wasn't aware WI, IL and AR were west of Yellowstone.  When did they move it?

They say it's the most geologically unstable place in the world.

Indians believed it was haunted by evil spirits.

If it ever goes KaBoom it will definitely suck real bad !!!

Just my $0.02 anyway.............

"They" are most likely incorrect.  Go read up a bit.

I guess I made a typo.
Ha Ha........real funny  I know where these states are in relation to Yellowstone.  I also know that the weather systems in this country generally

move from the west coast to the east coast, which means that any ash kicked into the air will likely blow to the east of Yellowstone not to the west.

Interesting......I hadn't read the wiki site regarding Yellowstone before.  It would be interesting to see if any of the information on this program

conflicts with the information on the wiki site.

the caldera under yellowstone blows roughly every 800k years.  it's blown 2.4million, 1.6 million, and 800k years ago.  geologists have found ash deposits as far east as, iirc, iowa.  predictions are that it'd dump ash up to a few feet deep in the affected areas.  it'd truly be TEOTWAWKI.

I knew what you meant, reading it just reminded me of this:

(crap I don't have the demotivaltional poster on my work computer, will upload it here tonight when I get home)

Sorry if my reply came off a bit salty........it's been a bad week so far........guess I wasn't even able to laugh at my own mistake.   You're right though, that was funny.

No worries!  Give me an hour or three and I will get the Switzerland motivational pic up above so my response actually makes sense!

You're only off by a little bit.  Every 650kY is closer, 2.1 MYa, 1.3MYa and 640kYa.  We're due*, but unlikely to
happen tomorrow or in our lifetimes.  But if it does go with any force similar to past ones, it could be a TEOTWAWKI
event for North America.

Personally, I'm not worried.

*sez the geologist in me who thinks anything less than a million years is an eyeblink...

don't forget at least two years of no summer, massive crop failures. The ash isn't dust either it would be tiny particles of glass that would wreck havok on the lungs. I saw somewhere that the area appears to be building up but of course it rises and falls without going off.

Assuming they could predict it by sensors and whatnot, how early of a warning will we get?
24 hrs? 12 hrs? None?

well considering it will be an extinction level event, I'm not too worried about it, since we'll all be dead in a few months anyway from the ash and lack of sun light, no plants or animals.

yep we're fucked.

One expert stated there would be a steady increase in earthquakes and their intensity (along with other geological activity) to signal a coming eruption.  Another expert said it could go any time.    [://

No sense in worrying about it, I'm not on any .gov list to be squirreled away in some super bunker to repopulate the earth.

Here's a question that occurred to my non-geological self as I watched the show:
Couldn't they lance it like a boil and provide a vent for the pressure?

But if we all held our breath, it would reduce global warming.  Less co2.
