As I start seeing the mice getting in real early this year I'm thinking yet again its going to be a cold winter. Last two winters we had heavy sheets of ice that took out power for a few days. It looks like we might have the same this year so I was thinking of stocking up on some wool blankets not the ones that cost $100+ but some that will be good for the kids to lug around the house and have on there bed.
Edited to add where do you get good wool blankets from? |

I have several blankets from my years in the Navy. I should have grabbed twice as many as several have "grown legs" through the years as the the kids have move out on their own. I'd like to get a hold of a dozen just to have on hand. I had 6 of them from my time in the Marines now less then 4 years later I might have two of them left. |

my wifes grandmother made us two queen sized fleece blankets, that are as warm as wool, but not scratchy. go to wallyworld, buy fleece fabric as big as you want. it takes two sections of fabric to make one blanket. lay the fleece back to back and cut 4 inch slits through both layers every 1.5 inches all the way around. now tie the two sections together with a square knot. google "no sew fleece blankets" for more detailed instuctions. |

Ya I was wondering about stocking up on some of these! These dont buy those. they are made like paper. a bunch of fibers all matted together... NOT WOVEN. i bought those many years ago and not only do they smell like crap, they are crap. i ended up using them for moving blankets and then they ended up in my garage and i used em under the car as a work mat, a very expensive mat. i never did use em as blankets. |
| This is what I told was the best surplus out there At $35 for 100% wool not to bad. I'm thinking of picking up a few of these and the wife found a Merino Lambswool Blanket king size for $179! |

My wife sewed up some covers from old sheets for ours. Makes them much more comfy and less scratchy. They make great quilt bases.... use muslin cotton and make it a quilt. You'll love them. I just took my old Italian wool blanket that I got for free and washed it the other night trying to get out some of that stink out of it when I washed it I added 1 cup white vinegar to the load and it make the blanket not as scratchy and a lot softer but is still stinks washed it 4 times with everything from Baking soda to Wash soda , even used the good smelling soap with lavender and it did not work at all!

Like them? Yes, but way prefer a quilted down comforter or even a new synthetic wool blanket. About the only time I use my wool blankets anymore is trying to sleep near an open fire. Tj I would go for down but alliges just kill me in the morning. How is that synthetic wool? Is it better then the real wool? |

It insulates about the same per thickness, but its lighter and far more water resistant. |

Quoted: Check your local Army/Navy store, that's where I get mine. This is pretty much what we do, just troll around avery couple of weeks and see what's out there. Another place to check online is some of the historical re-enacting sutlers, they usually have different weights in stockand they are usually pretty reasonable. We use wool blankets for just about everything, from sleeping pads when people stay over on the floor, primary blankets on the beds, or we even take them hiking with us, they still retain heat even if they get soaked. They're just not that fun to carry after the get wet. |

The Italian wool mil surp blankets are the warmest and toughest.
The Brit white wool blankets are nice and soft. http://www.majorsurplus.com/Blankets-C2093.aspx |

Northwest Traders The Italian one I have was not that warm the ones I got from the military. I was told that the French 1950 wool blankets where the best ones from the link I posted. My wife love the blankets that where on that link the only problem she does not like wool. I wish I could buy one for my daughter but a 6 years old I'll have to wait I would freak out if she did something to that blanket. |

Quoted: The Italian blankets come in two weights. The heavy is four pounds. The other I'm going to say three five pounds even though it is a bit lite. the quality of the wool is unheard of at the surlpus prices.Buy the heavy German blankets and use linen sheets or get the girls silk undies from sportsmansguide. They will not fit most men.But the ladies and kids should be ok.Quoted: As has been stated the Italian or German blankets are the way to go. Keep in mind if you buy the old blankets from the link there is some care involved but my second day and a few more after were on a old blanket like that. That blanket was old when I was tasked to poo and drool and wretch on it.It has now been through two more generations of wains. Its abit faded with some spot stains. Its still a fine blanket. |

I'd also recommend Blanket Brigade for Witney Blankets. If price isn't really an object, you can't beat CJ Wilde's hand woven blankets. They're incredible. |

That should help noticeably. |
| I got three of the German ones from Deutche Optik. Not cheap at $40 ea (I split an order of 6 with another guy), but very nice blankets. They don't smell, feel quite heavy and are warm. They are also a nice size, plenty big enough to cover both myself and my wife while cuddling on the couch. |

For your own family, get the warmth and durability of a real wool blanket. There are quality surplus ones available at very modest prices. I have the standard USGI wool blankets, the white British ones, and the 6lb German ones that say "Bundes Eigentum" - and these last ones are the best!!! They are unissued, clean, super thick, well-woven, and really quite soft for 100% wool. I think they are about the best wool blanket available anywhere. (especially for about $200 less than a new Hudson's Bay Blanket) |

I bought 1 from d.o. and found them for 30.00 at s.g.......best wool blanket ive seen......wish I would have had a couple during the blizzard of 85 in turkey.....far superior to the US issue |

Just get a couple of the "Snuggies" (sp?) Them things that have arm holes in them, they sell on tv. They even have them in pet sizes now.
With them things you can keep warm, but still move around and use your arms (couse you wont be holding onto the blanket) If you wear it out side the house, they look they would be real good for hideing a weapon too. I bet if enough folks are interested in a group buy, they would probably make a batch in multi-cam. |
