Saw on the local news that Vanderbilt hospital and university is testing the H1N1 flu vaccine. They are testing 250 people and are going to have them inform them of any side effects. The testing of the vaccine according to the doctor in charge is going to be over several months, and she said that it will be a 2 injection process over a 5 month process. Now since H1N1 does not have a mortalilty rate that even hits 1% why would you volunteer to be a test subject?

Later I got a recorded message from the school system informing all parents that there are several cases of flu in the school system right now. School has only been in for 8 days, but they wanted to let us know not to panic. RUN FOR THE HILLS yeah right. So I let my son listen to the message, and told him to continue the hand washing that we have discussed. I also told him to keep an eye out for anyone that is "obviously ill". I figure the teachers are going to watch for ill students and send them to the nurse, but with how schools are who knows. So I have my son carrying 2 n95 surgical masks, and told him that if someone is sitting near him coughing, hacking, etc... and the teacher does nothing, to speak to the teacher privately about the obviously ill person. If the teacher does not send the student to the nurse, I have told him to dawn the mask. Is this over reacting?

The parents should have their heads examined for sending a sick child to school.

Given how fast some folks are reporting the onset, the kid might have been fine that morning and a mess by the time he goes home in the afternoon, having potentially given his or her entire class the flu

Nice to know that the testing will be complete in January (5 months from now) for something they want people to take in September.

Tell him to "don" the mask.  Dawn is what happens in the morning.

My wife worked as a school nurse for years.  She says one big challenge is parents send their kids to school EVEN WHEN THEY KNOW THE KIDS ARE SICK.   Parents are too busy, can't get a baby sitter, can't afford to stay home, the kid can always go see the school nurse....the excuses are endless.

People WILL be sending their sick kids to school.

Maryland school systems are talking about ways to keep school in session even if the H1N1 rate goes up.

1. Keeping just the sicks kids home.
2. Isolating the sick kids in a sick room. Good luck with that.

My whole family just got over the The Flu. The Dco wouldn't call it H1N1. Man was it rough. I was down for 3 days. 103 temps for all of us.

It sucked and its supposed to be a mild strain. Damn I couldn't imagine a harsh strain.

Are you overreacting?

My kids each had a kit to take to school last may.

4 -N-95 masks ( tupperware container keeps them from getting crushed in the backpack
purell in their pockets

purell wipes
