They're both pretty cheap.
Shell out $10.00, get some and let us know.

Here's a question.

I bought three things of Datrex bars some while ago, they were manufactured in 04-06 and have an expiration date of 04-11.

Two have been in my cool dry basement, one has been in my truck.  The packaging on the one in my truck is still air sealed tight.  The two that were in the basement aren't air sealed tight, the outer packaging is somewhat loose like they were punctured or something, not sure why they are like this as they have just been sitting on a shelf the whole time.

Anyway,

I've never tried them and want to give it a go tomorrow.

Which should I do?  The one that doesn't seem air tight that's been in a cool dry basement or the one that is air tight but has been in a truck for three years with the temp changes?

Temperature is not a problem for life boat rations in that length of time. Oxygen is a problem, I wouldn't eat from the open package.

I've only tried the Mainstay, and they are very good tasting.   Like a lemon flavored shortbread cookie.

I have the 3 pack size for my hiking pack, and a six pack size in my car trunk BOB.  Neither has ever de-pressurized in the 3-4 years I've kept them handy.  I ate one after 3 hot summers and freezing winters in my trunk, and it tasted fine.

Thanks for the info.

I'm not sure why they 'de-pressurized' but that is something I will consider if buying more.

They say 5 years but are they taking their faulty packaging into account...

I go with Mainstay.  I've had several Datrex packages lose their vacuum seal, and only one Mainstay do so.

I'm not partial to the taste of any of them, but that's not really importance, since they both taste better than shoes.

And there goes a mouth-full of Cola onto the keyboard.

I found the Datrex to taste like shortbread cookie, one of my favorite cookies. The Mainstays tasted alright, but they left a greasy nasty aftertaste.

If I had to subsist on either one, it'd be the Datrex for sure.

Are any of these bars gluten free?  My family has allergies to wheat.   I am sure a full belly is nice, but not at the cost of  .......I'll spare the details but it ain't pretty.

I recall the Datrex had wheat, but the mfg website did not have any details on ingredients. You might contact them and ask... here

Not sure about Mainstays...

Have you considered Clif Bars; they are only good for maybe a year or two, but are far tastier. I did subsist on them for a hiking weekend as an experiment; they worked well, except that they have too much fiber when they're all you eat. Bring extra TP for sure.

My celiac is bad enough that I react to oats too.  Like violently. Something to do with fiber and my gut. My kids
are the same way. The best thing we have found is larabars, but fudge they are expensive, around $2 a piece.  We have made our own (dates and nuts in a food processor basically) for regular consumption, but have not devised a long term storage method for them yet.

I am just going to have to learn to make pemmican or something.

I'm sorry to hear that you can't tolerate oats either.

I noted a fascinating article in Scientific American that shows that they are making progress on drugs to help with this disease. See page 5: here

Have you experimented with other flours like rice or Quinoa?

Datrex does use wheat flour.
