I see from time to time people wanting painkillers in their stash. Is this really important?

Advil should suffice for just about anything.

For the big stuff (scripts...) you'd better be careful about stockpiling them.

More then a 60 day supply could be looked at as evidence of possession with intent to distribute.

Better to make the Pharm as target #1 when SHTF really happens...like the cops in NO did

It may be.  NSAIDs are useful not only as painkillers, but also in reducing the severity
of injuries by reducing swelling.

That aside, don't underestimate the value of comfort items.

I have had five surgeries in my life; all of them sucked with pain killers, they would have been pure hell without them.  They can be a very nice comfort, but in most cases you can live without them.

However after the worst one, I would have not physically been able to get up and walk without them.  In SHTF, it could have been the difference between life and death.

Over the counter pain meds and booze are in my stash.

Yes, IMNSHO as a pharmacist and survivalist you need pain meds in your SHTF drug stash.

If you are not allergic to codeine, Tylenol #3 or Tylenol #4 are excellent choices.

The codeine in the Tylenol #3 or #4 is good for pain, cough, diarrhea, anxiety.

Get your doc to write you a prescription for 24 or so.  Ask your pharmacist to put the expiration date on your bottle.  It'll still be good for a couple of years past the expiration date, just maybe a little less potent.

If you're allergic to codeine you can get similar effects from a hydrocodone containing medicine like Lortabs or Norco.

To keep you out of legal trouble, ALWAYS keep these in the original bottle, do NOT repackage them in any way.  That little prescription bottle is an excellent, durable place to keep them.

Also be sure to keep some OTC naproxen and ibuprofen, both of which are good for pain like bone pain or dental pain.

If I did have any I wouldn't be stupid enough to blab it around.

how long are tylenol and ibuprofen good after expiry?  any harmful degradation species?

I would think in  a shtf scenario the phamacists and assistants took all the good shit on the way home.

If you get a smokin tooth while out in the middle of nowhere you'll trade your first born for something stronger than the over the counter stuff . A 2 day supply of Vicodin or Demerol is nice to have on hand.

For a guy who cranks out kidney stones on a regular basis like I do?
Nothing will stop it but Oxycodene (sp)  I'll be swapping beans and rice with the local druggie assholes just to get some relief

My wife had a bad car wreck 5 years ago.  Her life is pure shit without the meds.  The docs said good news 'no surgery', bad news: 'you are fucked up and will be for a long time.'   They said it more doctory, tho.  We have a three day supply saved, for now and are working to a week, then two.  A dose from each 'script' is tucked away.  We have got the impression if you ask for more you get a and then go streaight to rehab w/o passing GO or collecting $200.

Someone with more knowledge than me please correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've seen  pain meds loose their strength with age. So in your case it might be wise to rotate your stash.

Thanks.  I was trying to write that was in the plan, but I kept sounding like a smartass.  We are on the same frequency.  Her daily dose is four pills, we are stashing one per month.  It took a year to get a three day supply ahead.  She really needs all four per day to function so one short a month is a livable decision.  I think on the bottle (I need to check again) the expiration date is two years out.  It will be easy to take the 3 to 6 day supply and trade it out with fresh meds every  year or two.  Voila, explanation, sans smart-assed response!
