just saw a commercial for this new show coming on discovery. 10 people have to start over after TEOTWAWKI.here is the blurb from discovery.com:
What would you do in the wake of a global catastrophe? How would you find food? Water? Shelter? The Colony is a controlled experiment to see exactly what it would take to survive and rebuild under these circumstances. For 10 weeks, a group of 10 volunteers, whose backgrounds and expertise represent a cross-section of modern society, are isolated in an urban environment outside Los Angeles and tasked with creating a livable society. With no electricity from the grid, no running water and no communication with the outside world, all the volunteers have to work with are their skills and whatever tools and supplies they can scavenge from their surroundings. Experts from the fields of homeland security, engineering and psychology have helped design the world of The Colony to reflect elements from both real-life disasters and models of what the future could look like after a global viral outbreak. Over the course of the 10-week experiment, the Colonists must work together to build the necessities of survival, such as a water-filtration system, a battery bank that powered their electricity, a solar cooker, a shower system and a greenhouse – and even some niceties (a coffee maker!). Okay, so did they put in the criminal? The doper or two. How about the "preparedness type"? The senior citizen x 2? The young kid?
Or was it just ten unemployed or underemployed nincompoops thrown together, all marginally cute (for sex appeal), but ignorant city slickers? John |

This was done in Australia 5 years ago and it was a recreation of how life was like in the pioneer days. It was a really good program and pretty realistic dont know about this US one though.

Saw this too. Here is a little "trailer" for it.....they got a pretty good cross section of folks- two medicals, handyman, martial artist, construction, aerospace engineer......much better than the average "cross section" I would say. They supposedly will be "attacked" by a gang from time to time also....very interesting. I bet nobody gets shot....

I don't think I'll waste my time with this. I took a look at the site and the "intruders" video. In a real world scenario, these folks would be toast. A couple of them seem to realize that the rules change post-SHTF, but one woman was complaining about a lack of "common courtesy" when the men started to search the "intruders."
P.S.: I know this is "reality" tv and not actual reality, but couldn't they at least have used paintball guns or the like to add a dash of realism? |

first thing is I think in a real life scenairo I would'nt have a team like that. I mean, you don't HAVE to be stuck with someone who is not like minded.
Anyone with kids knows the only way to protect the core is keep corrosion away from the center. In other words, only those that are like minded would be with me. I don't care about "being nice"; when the SHTF, political correctness is gone, and it's back to the earth common sense. Those that don't agree can go start their own utopia. I really don't care; they spent their money on going to concerts, nice vacations and buying the latest toys while I'm rasing my family on one income, wifey is homeschooling our kids, doing the garden and prepping. But I'll be watching as much as I can (online) to get ideas & concepts for future plans. That's the first one, surround yourself with like minded folks with something useful to offer. |

John Did they add lawyers, lobbyists, the ones that sell their own Mothers Soul...for a buck. (who are selling this beautiful country down the drain because of their own greed). The first that I would eliminate, would be politicians, lawyers, lobbyists, wall street. OH and left wing radical green peace marixt communist.. They would go before first. Oh we are talking reality shows, not eliminating them from your post shtf world. OOPS.. Perhaps they should show Let's screw the little man. We have a degree, really do nothing, screw our workers, send some emails, kiss the higher ups asses. The heavy lifting in this Country is not the white shirts.... Many couldn't change their own oil if needed. One example, if every trucker pulled over for 3 days, it would be a shtf, If they all took a 2 week vacation at once, holy shit. NO NOTHING.. Perhaps not even your dry cleaning, because the part, to restore the dry cleaner was on a truck parked for 2 weeks. Or you have to listen to your bimbo wife, complain about the tanning bed wait, or out of service. Lesson learned, anyone can tell people what needs to be done. Only certain people can do it. If you don't know who Can and who Can't your screwed. |

Where i live almost everyone has a shotgun or riflle of some sort because they are farmers, hunters etc. |

i think i'd have to loose a few cast co-members real quick were i there. would have probably been a lot of fun to be a cast member though(except for having to deal with the fucking sheep). also would be interesting to have a cast member go totally native(all rambo, burt guner, aardvark style) and sink pipe into one of the "biker gang member"s' skulls or rewire the the improvised electric matrix while all were asleep through an old flyback transformer and fry the first "intruder" to grab ahold of the door, or strike off on their own or with the best of the supplies and a few of the others so they don't have to deal with the social loving sheep, etc)... other than the fact that hollysuck will undoubtely fuck it up, think i'll at least check it out... K. |
