A little while ago I wrote about a SHTF incident that happened to me when I came across a motorcycle accident and was somewhat unprepared for the incident. I vowed to get a better first aid kit for my vehicle and check back with what I purchased/acquired. I bought a new M-3 medics pouch (Combat Lifesaver Bag) LINK and tossed in the remains of an old one along with other items I had lying around or bought. Instead of just an emergency medical kit, I have a broader spectrum bag, attempting to do everything short of IVs and surgery, so the contents are varied. It’s a vehicle bag so weight is not a problem.
As promised, here are the contents and some links to what I now have in my vehicle. I don’t have the capability to upload pictures, but I provided links for some of the applicable items. Bag: Fox Products Modular Operator. Large enough for everything without having to cram it all in to make it fit. Plus with the MOLLE points on the outside, one can accessorize with different pockets. LINK Individual First Aid Kit (old): LINK Threw out the medicine bottles and the water purification tabs (they had expired) and tossed the rest into the bag at various points/bags. Didn’t really need the case or the pouch, but kept it because I’m a pack rat. IFAK (New issue): Two attached to the outside of the bag. Like this LINK Contents include a pair of gloves, an Israeli bandage LINK, roll of surgical tape, tourniquet, compressed gauze and a nasopharyngeal airway opener. Two other pouches on the outside with zipper pockets. Don’t know the manufacturer. Came with a pack I was issued from my base. Kind of look like these LINK but not in Multicam or with the exterior PALS webbing. Contents: 1 bag of surgical gloves (approximately 10 pair) 1 Quart sized bag of cotton balls (generic use) 1 bag mixed medicines to include: 1 50 tab bottle of Naproxen Sodium, 1 50 tab bottle Ibuprofen, 3 rolls antacids, tube of chap stick, half a dozen individual packs of pain reliever 1 bag of pain ointments to include: 1 1 oz tube of Neosporin, 6 burn relief gel individual packs 1 bag assorted dressing sponges and gauze pads to include: 8 4x4 dressing pads, 10 3x3 pads, 12 2x2 pads 1 bag alcohol prep pads (approximately 1 dozen) 1 bag Benzalkonium Chloride pads (approximately 1 dozen) 1 bag Povidone-Iodine prep pads (approximately 1 dozen) 1 bag wet naps (approximately 1 dozen) 1 bag various sized band aids (50 + in the bag) 1 thermal blanket 1 disposable poncho 2 cold packs 2 eye pads 1 military issue eye dressing 2 rolls elastic wrap 2 rolls self grip athletic bandage 1 pack Moleskin 2 SAM splints 1 250 ml bottle sterile water 1 Bottle hydrogen peroxide 2 rolls surgical tape 2 rolls stretch gauze bandage 5 OD green triangle bandages LINK 1 roll latex free elastic bandage 6 inches wide 1 11 3/4 inch dressing pad 1 7 1/2 inch x 8 inch dressing pad 8 4 x 7 1/4 inch dressing pads (old school dressings like these LINK ) Tools: Strap Cutter/Multi Purpose tool: Decided not to just go with a generic strap cutter and glass breaker and went with a multi type tool instead. Works pretty well as I tested it on some old winter weight BDUs I was getting rid of. LINK Attached the whole thing to the shoulder strap so it is immediately accessable. 1 pair emergency shears 1 Pair of tweezers 1 pair sterile tweezers (plastic ones that are a onetime use deal…figured I’d throw them in anyway) 1 set fingernail cutters 1 hemostat (came with M-3 bag) 2 airway openers (not sure of the technical name, but I know how to use them) Leatherman Pulse (everyone needs a multi-tool, I feel naked without one and this was a spare) I’ve put everything that would be immediate trauma/lifesaving in the outer pockets and the things that aren’t crucial to lifesaving inside the main bag. What I still need… CPR mask. I have one in the small “required” kit in my vehicle, so I’m covered in that regard, but want/need one for this bag. Want to replace at least half the old military dressings with Israeli bandages LINK as they are way easier to use than the old ones. I will still keep a few old ones around since they do work fairly well for minor wounds. ACE bandage. Good old generic athletic bandage. Anti-diarrhea pills (keep forgetting them until it’s too late) Anti-itch cream – Probably Gold Bond, small bottle Benadryl or equivalent Possibly a small bottle of calamine lotion? Thinking QuikClot 1st Response or QuikClot ACS, not sure which yet. More hemostats maybe? Probably don’t need them, but better to have and not need than… Comments, suggestions for needed items? |
