i was digging through my gear this week and found my esbit stove and had a bar of fuel left on it. i tried to light it but it wouldnt take fire. does this stuff have a shelf life? as far as i could tell the package was unopend, it could have had pin holes.

also is there any rules against taking it on a airline? (not in a carry on, but in checked luggage)

Trioxane is supposed to have almost an indefinate shelf life if packaged correctly. How old is it and where was it stored? Try again and see if you can light it with a lighter or something.

I doubt you can take it on a plane but you never know until you try!

Trioxane is supposed to also be toxic IIRC

Never had any that wouldn't burn.   But I've had some crap from a funshow that was pretty bad. Kind of half melted, the other half crumbly.

I used a trioxane fuel bar last year that I know I purchased in the mid 90s.

Worked like a champ.

hey bro..if the foil pack has a snag/hole the tab will start to decay.....it will turn to powder and start to "mellt down" what your left with will/should burn with a match or a spark from a flint and steel....a good bar of trioxane will spark up no problem ,thats why i use them as a no-nonsence fire starter with my flint and steel kit.... always check your kit from time to time,  and by the way i stil have and use trioxane from the 60'and 70' thats still good... and  the U.S. military use them in larger survival kits ,so works for me......vince g. 11b inf.

i think that is what happend to mine. it just lost its flamibility. i tried to light it with a match but it just wouldnt take. it was dry and lumpy. i have more stocked up in a ammo can and in ziplock still in the foil pack. all that should be good.

still looking for info if it is ok to put into checked luggage. i have to go to central america sat. it would just be nice to have a bar just in case.
