What's in yours? Since I've pretty much finished up my BOB I want to start working on a GHB.  Can anyone recommend decent [cheaper] bag that could be used as a GHB?  Also what are some essentials I should have in it that you wouldn't have in a BOB?

comfy walking shoes if you wear dress shoes to work.    maps of your AO to find alternate routes home.  (and of course, food, water, compass, etc.) and since it's probably a one-time use bag, I just have it all in a school backpack that my kids used...

Well for essentials, I'd definitely put car keys at the top of the list.

Then some extra cash in case the car breaks down for a tow truck, taxi, or bus.

On top of that the usual.... Wallet, cell phone, knife, CCW, chap stick, etc.

If you plan on hiking it out Bear Grylls style, definitely load up on the pack, shelter, mountain house, MSR pocket rocket, spork, 18 M4 mags and don't forget the TP! Just don't be home late for dinner, the wife may not appreciate that - Russian invasion, swine flu pandemic, wal-mart ammo shipment or not.

I kinda go against the grain here as I'm a realist. I don't find it feasible to trek it home survivorman style, setting up bivouac in the woods and frying up a squirrel I caught with my bugout snare. If I'm really that far away from home I'll find an alternative mode of transportation or stay in a motel for the night. If I'm hungry, I'll hit up a fast food joint or a restaurant. If worse comes to worse and I'm really screwed, I spent countless nights in fighting holes when I was in the Corps and I'll tough it out if need be. And lastly, if the roads turn into the MSR's of Iraq, chances are my Xterra isn't going to withstand the blast of an IED or being lit up by automatic weapons fire.

But to really answer your question, it's always good to have some items on hand.

For instance I carry these in my truck:

1. City and topo maps
2. Car GPS loaded with city and topo maps
3. FAK and trauma kit
4. Tools, clamps, bulbs, etc. to fix when they break on the truck
5. Comms (CB, HAM)
6. Water
7. Toilet paper
8. Flashlights
9. Batteries
10. Tow strap
11. Jumper cables

Things of that nature. If I'm going on a trip, then I pack accordingly.

If I have to hump it home farther than the distance of work or school, I probably have bigger issues to deal with.
