Has anyone read Wilderness First Aid: Emergency Care for Remote Locations, Third Edition? Or can anyone recommend a wilderness first aid book that is pretty good? I completed a basic level EMT course a few months ago. However, EMS puts a heavy emphasis on transport, clearing the scene in less than 10 minutes, and being at a hospital in less than a hour.
I have been looking to sign up for a 40 hour wilderness first aid class...but right now there is none close by that works with my schedule. I did not do a search, but some have mentioned the book Where there is no doctor...I believe that is it. Can anyone recommend that one or hit the highlights of what it covers. Thanks in advance. |

The best book I have found so far is "Wilderness Medicine" by Paul S. Auerbach, ISBN#0-323-00950-6.
Here is the info: Amazon Link It's about 2,000 pages of everything you ever wanted to know about wilderness emergencies, including drug dosages, recommended treatments, treatments to use when no medicine is available, etc. They also have a field guide version that is much more portable. Really, this is the first book I reach for at home when I have a medical question. Arclight |

Just wanted to say thanks for the above suggestions. I found a copy of Wilderness Medicine 5th Edition at Chinook Medical for $150.00. Fed Ex just dropped it off. Flipping through the book, this is exactly what I was looking for. After reading his blog for a couple days, I thought Auerbach's book would be a good investment.
Also wanted to add concerning National Outdoor Leadership School. I found a Wilderness First Aid class not far (about 2 hours from home). Landmark Learning is actually doing the instruction. If I am able to attend I'll let you guys know how the class was. Thanks again. |
