I have a 10HP Briggs 5000kw gen that is super-loud. The muffler is not blown out or rusted out, it's juts plain loud.
Looking for some ideas, or to hear from someone who has successfully muffled their gen more than stock. ideas: Build a glass packed silencer like a dirt bike design. Bolt on a muffler meant for a small car Dig hole in the groud and direct into the hole Anyone have any thoughts? Here is what the stock muffler looks like:
And I did find this article: Quieting a Generator |

I did something very similar to mine and it worked like a charm! |
| This has been discussed before with the only real resolution being to bury the gen set. Much of the noise is NOT from the exhaust, but the engine itself. Search some of the RV forums on other sites. You will soon realize your pissing in the wind on this one. I fought and fought mine and ended up with a Honda EU series. Wouldn't go back. Pricey? YES. Worth it? I think so every time I start it. Stuart |
| Yea the cheap construction type generators are real loud... A tank could roll up to my front door and I wouldnt hear it...I'm looking at ripping out my motorhome genny and using it instead.. It's an Onan and isalmost whisper quiet compared to my other one... Motorhome is permanently hooked up at our weekend place anyway and dont need it... |

Stuart many people have had good lucke building and insulated enclosure and running the exhaust down into a hole partially filled w/ water. the exhaust is run under the water three or four inches. another option is to build a top less enclosure about 6 or so feet high that directs the sound up. |

running the exhaust down into a hole partially filled w/ water. the exhaust is run under the water three or four inches. Pretty good idea! If you took a foot long section of pipe, drilled a bunch of 1/4" holes in it and then submersed it in a couple of inches of water the backpressure would be minimized. At Home Depot you can get a 1/2 - 1" thick 4'x8' sheets of syra-foam insulation for $10-20 to build a dog. A 12v fan pushing air thru a baffle with a couple of right angle turns should cut down on engine noise. I'm going to try this later in the year. |

Dig a hole, sand bag it, insulated enclosure, all would cut down on the internal machine noise, for sure. As someone already noted, make sur there is air flow, as they are air cooled. I'm going to try a small auto-muffler, or an ATV muffler. Easy enough to make brackets to hang from the generator frame. thanks for the input. |

Any more info on this one? I have an almost identical model (mine's a 5500) and would like to mod mine similarly. |

I'm going to check with a mechanic buddy, for a decent used muffler.
Also will check Advanced Auto for Cherry Bombs and "turbo" mufflers. I hate to say it, but I think I passed one by in the past 2 weeks on the side of the road. I remember thinking to myslef, "Now that looks like an almost new muffler". drat! |

I had good luck with stacking concrete block arround the generator. Getting air to the generator isn't much of an issue in most conditions becasue the hot air from the generator rises. If you want to line the generaoter, forget foam- too light and flamiable. Something heavier like sheetrock would work better, as would the asphalt impregnated mineral fiber sheets used for expansion joints in concrete. if you want two layers of block, you could fill the space in between with sand.
Good mufflers can be had at TSC. I would attach them with flexable exhaust hose. You could bury the muffler under sand to reduce noise. |

they make " silencers" for atv mufflers.......................maybe one of those could be mounted to a genny. they cut a atv noise by 50% yeah, I thought of that too, I have a muffler/silencer from a Honda TRX90, but I'll have to check the pipe diameter, it's pretty small as I remember. Anything has to help. |
