Best and least expensive are most often mutually exclusive, in my eperience. I also would like to see input from the knowledgable on the subject.

Been carrying a Ronson Jet Lite for years.  One didn't survive the washer, but otherwise they've been 100%.

My EDC for years now has been a standard Zippo I bought at Walgreens for $9. Basic chrome model. About as windproof and waterproof as any. Only thing you have to do is remember to keep it fueled so I can't say that is fits the "longest lasting" category. If worst comes to worst you can dunk it in a can of gasoline or coleman fuel and it is ready to go again (in my younger days guys used to lower them into the fuel tank on their motorcycle on a string to fuel them up). In my GHB I have a Bic for lighting my stove etc just to make sure I have one when I need it.

+1 on that.  I have a couple that I bought back in 98' and they still light when needed.

Zippo mini. Picked one up a couple hours ago for 12.95 (brushed aluminum).

Zippos are pretty wind proof but the fuel evaporates from them readily. If you store it do not expect it to light a year later, unless you refuel it.

Plain old BICs seem to last a pretty long time and are very tolerant of storage.

+1 on Zippo.

Only lighter there is that will still be working decades from the time you bought it.  Only lighter I've ever used that will work in a convertible or boat without crawling down into the floor board.

I'm totally over the disposables.  Nothing sucks more than being cold, wet, miserable, your fingers numb, and shaking then when you flip that sucker and it goes snap breaking in your hand.

As a long time smoker the 2 best disposable lighters are the " mini bic", and one called "dejeep".
The mini bic last at least as long as any of the larger size disposables, but it has a good consistant flame hight.
The  Dejeep is not commonly seen, but is a shorter, wider, 3 cell disposable that has similar qualitys as the mini bic.

I know this isnt exactly what you were asking, but as far as disposables go, these two are the best, and you did mention CHEAP.

How do these butane lighters work at high altitude and in very cold weather and stiff winds? Those I have tested often don't work even when I but it under my armpit for a few minutes to warm up.

Peanut lighter basically a round zippo with an o-ring so it lasts a lot longer between fuelings.

Butane torch insert for zippo cases.

I keep the peanut on my key ring and the butane one in my ghb.

The advantage of a Zippo is that you can fuel it with just about anything.

Gas, stove fuel, diesel, AV fuel,  lamp oil, alcohol, etc.
