i have never thought about them much.  most folks won't look twice at one and you can get them 33" long that will hold an AR carbine.
Academy or other sporting goods stores sell them for about $15.00 and one in the trunk will hold a lot of gear.
i needed one a few weeks back when i got two flat tires and had to load everything from my car into another car so i could leave mine at the tire store all day.
best part is the new ones are nylon and water resistant.  they may even hold your BOB if its reasonable in size.

it's a great thing to have in the car if you need to pack gear away without any attention.

ever consider it.

Check the local sports consignment shop (Play It Again Sports, etc.).  Used, good condition bat bags run around $5.

I use one to hold all my tarps and poles.  Works great.  Got it at a gunshow(must have been a loophole there somewhere).  Anyway, I think I only paid $9 or $10 for it.  I hadn't thought about using one as you have, but that's a good idea.
